Job Description
The Deputy Coroner will investigate violent, sudden, or suspicious death to determine the cause and manner of death and presence of criminal activity.
This position works Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:00pm

Starting Salary: $25.50 an hour / $53,040.00 annually

Work Hours: This position will work and be paid for 80 hours in a 2 week pay period
Current county employees will follow the county's promotion/demotion policy.
Responsibilities:
- Investigates cause and manner of death through witness interviews, physical examination of body, and examination of death scene
- Preserves integrity of death scene
- Communicates with family/friends of recently deceased
- Secures personal effects and property of deceased
- Maintains and organizes physical and computer records
- Conducts field investigations of death scenes
- Prepares samples and specimens for laboratory analysis
- Coordinates with other government agencies and offices in performing death investigations
- Conducts detailed interviews with the family, friends and or/witnesses to establish pertinent facts.
- Prepares accurate, detailed reports encompassing all aspects of the death investigation
- Photographically documents the death scene and the body
- Completes state mandated basic education course and annual continuing education requirements
- 1 Week course with requirement of successfully passing the exam
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Police and EMT experience preferred
- Experience with computers preferred
- Must be able to pay close attention to details, especially when investigating a death scene, and concentrate on work
- Must be able to cope with the emotional and mental stress inherent to the position and contact with grieving families
- Must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license, a good driving record, reliable transportation, and a willingness to travel within the County as needed
