Under direction of the Assistant Agricultural Commissioner, supervises, coordinates and participates in inspection work involved in the enforcement of laws pertaining to pest prevention, plant quarantine, pesticide use, apiary, vertebrate pest and weed control and produce/egg quality, as well as those pertaining to weights and measures, petroleum products and compressed gases.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate must have substantial knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of agricultural law enforcement and inspection, including pest and disease detection and eradication; as well as the principles, practices and procedures of Weights and measures including quality control, and fraudulent packaging and labeling inspections. It is essential the candidate have the ability to interpret and enforce laws/regulations related to agriculture and Weights & Measures while establishing and maintaining effective public relations.
- Assigns, supervises and evaluates the work of subordinate staff involved in inspection work and the enforcement of applicable laws and regulations.
- Assists in establishing and implementing policies and procedures for all divisions.
- Assists in the development of division budgets.
- Reviews, prepares and/or submits a variety of administrative and technical reports.
- Investigates complaints of potential violations; issues violation notices or takes other corrective action, as appropriate.
- Assembles evidence, prepares and presents cases against code violators.

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree specializing in agriculture, biological, chemical or physical sciences; or any discipline with a minimum 30 semester units, or equivalent, in one or any combination of the following disciplines: agricultural science, biological science, chemical science, physical science, mathematics, and/or statistics.
- Two (2) years experience in agriculture, biological, or physical science related fields with one (1) year lead or supervisory experience preferred.
License & Special Requirements:
- Requires State licensure as a Deputy County Agricultural Commissioner at the time of appointment.
- Additionally, candidate must obtain (within 24 months) State licensure as Deputy County Sealer of Weights and Measures.
- Requires a valid California driver's license.
