Yakima Valley College seeks two innovative full-time Dental Hygiene Instructorswho are active and accomplished in their discipline, have a record of successful teaching or related experience, and are committed to community college students and their success. These positions are full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) positions, with an anticipated start of September 9, 2024.

Reporting to the Dean – Workforce Education theDental Hygiene Instructors in partnership with Dental Hygiene Department Faculty will be responsible for teaching upper division 300/400 level courses within the Bachelor of Applied Science Dental Hygiene program as assigned. The applicants must be able to develop equity-minded practices within an educational environment, participate on internal and external committees, develop course curricula, and collaborate within the Dental Hygiene Department and other disciplinary areas at YVC.

Essential Tasks

JOB PROFILE:

  • Dedication to students by creating an equitable environment conducive to meeting students’ learning needs.
  • Teach various theory, laboratory, and clinical courses in the advanced 300/400 level Dental Hygiene program as assigned.
  • Contribute to program and institutional learning outcomes assessment.
  • Coordinate and complete outcomes assessment for the first-year curriculum component, and/or coordinate and complete outcomes assessment for the restorative and radiology curriculum components.
  • Contribute to program self-study efforts in preparation for the Commission on Dental Accreditation site visit (seven-year cycle).
  • Enthusiastic participation in department and divisional leadership opportunities e.g. department head, scheduling, curriculum committee.
  • Participate in department and division activities including faculty meetings, development of curriculum and course syllabi that are responsive to changes in the field, assist in the supervision of client services, serve on campus committees, and other related professional duties.
  • Commitment to upgrade knowledge and skills to maintain a relevant curriculum.
  • Enthusiasm for using and learning new technologies to support student success.
  • Provide student-centered academic advising within YVC’s Guided Pathways model.
  • Serve on institutional and community committees, including advisory and K-12 partnership committees.
  • Create and maintain business and industry relationships to provide externship opportunities for Business students.
  • Be a collaborative partner in the Dental Hygiene program and with other faculty and staff colleagues campus-wide.
  • Write and update curricula including course outlines and syllabi as required by the institution and based on educational research and industry trends.
  • Participate in advisory board meetings and program recruitment.
  • Maintain Professional Technical Educator certification which includes a professional development plan and may include maintenance of other certifications as required by the program (per WAC 131-16-092 and 131-16-093).
  • Commitment to an educational philosophy appropriate to a Hispanic Serving Institution, the community college system, and the needs of its diverse populations.
  • Willingness to teach alternate hours, if needed.
  • Other duties as assigned within reason of the job position.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree (or currently enrolled) in Dental Hygiene, education, or related field from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Minimum of three years' experience working in a dental clinic setting
  • Minimum of one year of full- or part-time Academic and Clinical Dental Hygiene Instruction at a college or university
  • Documented background in educational methodology consistent with academic and clinical Dental Hygiene education
  • Washington State license to practice Dental Hygiene
  • Eligibility for professional technical certification in the State of Washington (per WAC 131-16-080 and 131-16-091)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three years of teaching experience in Academic and Clinical Dental Hygiene Instruction at a college or university
  • Experience coordinating first-year Dental Hygiene labs and clinical education and/or coordinating restorative and radiology labs and clinical education
  • Positive professional experience working with diverse populations
  • Membership in Dental Hygiene professional organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to implement curriculum and deliver instruction in multiple modes of instruction
  • Proven culturally-responsive teaching

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Adult learning theory and techniques
  • Academic and career advising principles
  • Dental Hygiene content areas:
    • Dental Hygiene Fundamentals, Community Dental Health, and Dental Hygiene Professional Ethics and/or
    • Radiology, Dental Anatomy, Dental Materials, and Restorative Dentistry

ABILITY TO:

  • Teach a flexible schedule including, days, evenings, weekends, online or hybrid.
  • Work effectively with supervisors, colleagues, staff, and students as part of an education team.
  • Collaborate with business and industry partners.
  • Develop relationships within the regional business community.
  • Create a collegial and professional working environment.
  • Meet deadlines within the institution and course structure, such as timely grading and student feedback, committee work, and other requests for information and participation.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills for effectively interacting with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, community partners, and individuals of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Travel as needed to meetings and other campuses or community sites.
