Deckhand/Naturalist
Odyssey Whale Watch is seeking a Deckhand/Naturalist. A crew member in this role will start out the season as a deckhand and train under our current naturalist until they are comfortable on the microphone, at which point they would become our naturalist on our current naturalist’s days off. This role would be mostly deckhand work with minimal shifts per week as backup naturalist.
Deckhand responsibilities include:
- Prepping the vessel for each trip
- Ensuring the safety of all passengers
- Selling snacks and drinks in the galley
- Looking for whales and other wildlife
- Ensuring the safety of the vessel
- Line handling
- Cleaning of the vessel after each trip
Naturalist responsibilities include:
- Narrating the whale watch on the PA system
- Naturalist acts as the “host” of the trip
- Educating passengers on relevant wildlife (whales, dolphins, porpoises, fish, birds, etc)
Requirements:
- Must be comfortable and confident interacting with customers and talking over PA system
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field is preferred
- Knowledge of marine wildlife
- Experience on boats is a plus, however it is not necessary
- Must be able to pass a United States Coast Guard mandated drug screen - screens for marijuana and other substances
- Must live in the greater Portland, Maine area
- Odyssey’s season runs from late May- October 14
- Start date is flexible (Late may or early June).
- Must be able to work until October 14
