Dean of theSue and Radcliffe Killam Library
Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) seeks nominations and applications for the position of Dean of theSue and Radcliffe Killam Library.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Dean, under general direction, directs and supervises overall operations of the library including management of personnel, resources, building, user services, interlibrary cooperation, automated systems, short and long range planning, budgeting, preparing statistics, publicity and marketing, and public relations. It is expected that the Dean will:
  • Provide visionary leadership for the Killam Library.
  • Provide management direction in personnel matters including staffing, performance appraisals, and employee recognition or discipline.
  • Promote affirmative actions and equal opportunity in recruitment, selection, training, development, and promotion.
  • Initiate a needs assessment and implement a plan for selection, acquisition, cataloging, classification, circulation of library media materials, and collaborative library agreements.
  • Seek external funding and write grant proposals for enhancing library programs, facilities, and collections.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of library programs and services to meet the diverse needs of students and faculty.
  • Coordinate services and collections that support academic programs delivered in a variety of methods and at a variety of onsite and offsite venues.
  • Develop, interpret, and implement policies and procedures to meet library objectives for efficient daily operations and to guide long-term quality improvement.
  • Foster collaborative and creative opportunities within the library, across campus, in the community, and with other institutions by cultivating relationships and partnerships.
  • Facilitate and encourage the integration of emerging technologies.
  • Provide support for the scholarly activity of faculty librarians.
  • Participate in resource-sharing and library consortia.
  • Work with Texas A&M University System library leaders to pursue common goals and strategies.
  • Coordinate and finalize library budget preparation and exercise sound fiscal management to assure effective use of financial and human resources.
  • Direct facilities planning to provide optimal working and learning environments.
  • Perform other duties which may be assigned.

Required Qualifications
It is required that the selected candidate possesses a Master's degree in Library Science (or equivalent degree) from an American Library Association-accredited program and record of proven success related to the operation of libraries in an academic setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Eight years of related experience in a library environment, including managerial experience, is strongly preferred. In addition, it is preferred that the selected candidate has:
  • A Second Master's or advanced degree, Ph.D., or equivalent degree in related field.
  • Five years of successful library administrative experience with progressively more responsible positions such as department head, assistant dean, or associate dean.
  • A record of engagement in professional associations.
  • Experience with library advocacy in local, state, national and international settings.
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership integrating technology and digital resources for the organization, access and distribution of information.
  • Knowledge of electronic resources, library technologies, and automated library systems.
  • Prior success with strategic planning and assessment of library programs, operations, and services.
  • Knowledge of current issues, developments, innovations, and challenges in academic librarianship and archives, information technology, scholarly communications, and higher education.
  • Capacity to provide an atmosphere that encourages team building, accountability, professional growth of staff, trust, and productivity.
  • Experience to lead initiatives to encourage and facilitate the use of Open Educational Resources and Open Textbooks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Bilingual - English/Spanish preferred.
