MCNEESE STATE UNIVERSITY invites applicants to apply for the position of Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences.
POSITION NUMBER: U99375
POSITION INFORMATION: Reporting to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management, the Dean is expected to provide dynamic leadership in teaching, scholarly productivity, and service for the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Dean is also expected to stimulate and support collegiality, as well as a productive relationship within the University community and the area industry and business community. The position is appointed by the President of the University, and the appointment is approved by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System. This is a full-time, 12-month, unclassified administrative position. The appointment is available immediately.
UNIT: College of Agricultural Sciences
COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES: The College of Agricultural Sciences is one of six colleges that comprise the university and has approximately 15 FTE faculty members teaching traditional Agricultural Sciences (agribusiness, agronomy, agricultural education, animal science and pre-vet medicine), nutritional sciences (dietetics, food science, and nutrition), and natural resource conservation management (environmental science and wildlife management). Together the departments enroll approximately 350 undergraduate and 20 graduate students. The College of Agricultural Sciences is supported by resources, including: three teaching and research farms, a federally inspected red meat processing facility, and a commercial kitchen.
UNIVERSITY: McNeese State University, founded in 1939, has approximately 5,500 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. It offers graduate degrees across a range of disciplines including agriculture, business, education, engineering, English, creative writing, music education, and nursing. Located in a culturally diverse area with a population of more than 180,000 (Lake Charles and suburbs), the campus encompasses over 386 acres and is conveniently located to serve students from both southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas.

Position Duties/Responsibilities
  • Serves as an academic administrator who explains and implements university policies within his or her own college.
  • Supervises development of those policies unique to the college.
  • Coordinates and supervises all activities within the college so that academic excellence will be achieved in those disciplines for which the college is responsible.
  • Promotes a desirable image for the college and university and seeks to develop continuing good relations between the university and the area which it serves.
  • Works with University Advancement to assist with fundraising opportunities for the College.
  • Coordinates the activities of the department head, program coordinators, and unit managers toward a unified effort so that goals may be achieved.
  • Supervises, counsels, and encourages the department head, program coordinators, and unit managers in their efforts.
  • Maintains current records and ensures that the department head, program coordinators, and unit managers follow his or her example.
  • In coordination with appropriate college leaders, examines and analyzes both the content and adequacy of his/her college curricula, making certain that curricula and course offerings are current and that the university catalog reflects this fact.
  • Counsels department head on faculty recruiting, development, and faculty utilization within the framework of the college.
  • Coordinates and directs student recruitment and retention campaigns for the College and departments.
  • Is responsible for fiscal matters of the college.
  • In coordination with appropriate college leadership, oversees allotment of space and coordinates maintenance of facilities.
  • Teaches a course workload of three credit hours per regular semester.
  • Other duties as assigned by Provost.

Required/Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution in a discipline appropriate for the college programs. Individuals not yet possessing the terminal degree will be considered if they have experience working with and/or supervising academic and research teams at the university level.
  • Experience in improving operations, problem solving, and change management.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Evidence of successful supervision of professionals and the ability to work directly with diverse professional groups/disciplines.
  • Proven record of innovativeness and ability to foster teamwork.
  • Knowledge of assessment and continuous improvement processes.
  • Commitment to fostering a student-centered learning community.
  • Demonstrated evidence of increasingly complex managerial experiences with the ability to manage substantive and rapid growth.
  • A record of outstanding administrative leadership roles and a collaborative management style that fosters trust, respect, and successful working relationships with students, staff, deans, administrators, industry partners and community.
  • Ability to promote excellence in teaching, scholarship, and professional activity in the College.
  • Ability to resolve complex personnel issues.
  • Ability to work with community and industry partners to enhance the educational experience for our students from a local to global perspective.
  • A vision consistent with the strategic plans/goals of the College and University.
  • Experience and ability to convey his/her vision to move the College forward in cooperation with senior leadership within the College.
  • Experience in research and grant writing within the discipline.
