The College of Medicine is seeking an Academic Technologist/Analyst to join our Administration team.  This role will execute the implementation of multiple education technology software platforms and be responsible for training users. Additionally they will maintain a relational database and be responsible for aggregating, analyzing, and reporting data from multiple internal and external sources for longitudinal student assessment, program evaluation, continuous quality improvement, accreditation reporting, and research and scholarship. The Academic Technologist/Analyst will have a keen understanding of medical education processes specific to UI College of Medicine including but not limited to admissions, curriculum, assessment, and residency match in order to inform decisions around analysis and ensure validity of data. They will provide technical guidance with regard to proper data processing methods and performance standards.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collect, processes, and visualizes data to help answer business questions and enable strategic decision-making. Gathers requirements, understand business needs, performs data modeling, and develops data pipelines to generate the data architecture for data analytics. Utilizes the data architecture to develop reporting and interactive dashboards to provide insights for decision-makers.
  • Uses techniques such as data mining, machine learning, statistical analysis, and predictive modeling to uncover trends and patterns in data and discover hidden information. Monitor processes to ensure accurate and quality data is continually available for business needs.
  • Utilize best practices for data management and data query, to identify and aggregate data from multiple large databases housed within Information Resources, College and campus registrars, Admissions, and Educational Affairs.
  • Develop and maintain a relational database to automate extraction and collation of data from admissions systems; internal curricular and assessment systems including Oracle-based systems, the College's locally-developed testing system, and vended resources including Blackboard, Learningspace, Oasis, and eValue; and external data from National Board of Medical Examiners, Association of Academic Medical Colleges, and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, among others.
  • Determine and conduct appropriate statistical analyses to understand predictors of student performance and subsequent outcomes based on performance, with a particular emphasis on understanding disparities for the purpose of remedying them.
  • Provide user-friendly data dashboards and static reports for use in program, phase, and course evaluation.
  • Assist in compiling well-written, accurate reports for program evaluation, accreditation, and research.
  • Develop real time reports for students in M1-M4 classes, including reporting quartile rank in class for M4 students and competency achievement for M1-M4 students on a regular basis.
  • Produce data reports needed for periodic monitoring by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
  • Provide input into the College's process to optimize educational technology.
  • Prepare documentation to support area IT functions and provides user support for new or modified programs. Maintain and support assigned systems with documented testing and development of procedures to ensure minimal downtime and loss of productivity and service. Evaluates and supplement vendor-supplied documentation for third-party software.
  • Serve as key superuser for educational technologies listed above and newly acquired systems.
  • Supervise other staff or function as team leader on designated projects. Monitors the progress and direction of assigned tasks and makes corrections as needed. Determines training needs and provides training opportunities for staff.
  • Provide software testing expertise and assess the quality of specifications of enterprise applications/systems while adhering to accessibility and security best practices. Designs, implements, and executes tests for applications/systems as well as compiles reports to send their testing results to stakeholders.
  • Provide primary communication with the vendors and information technology of the educational technologies to allow for streamlined support, development, and updates.
  • Educate/train faculty and staff about best practices for use of the educational technologies to promote the most standardized efficient use that is comparable on all three campuses.
  • Adhere to all institutional requirements and ethical principles for data confidentiality and security and accuracy.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
  2. Minimum 1 years of professional IT experience within Database Design and Administration which includes Demonstrated experience in the design, creation and implementation of databases, including data models, logical and physical databases, data dictionaries and schemas, validation checks and data security.
  3. Demonstrated experience in data analytics and BI reporting including experience with BI tools such as PowerBI and/or Tableau
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree required in computer science, mathematics, social sciences, public health, research-related field or equivalent experience; educational measurement, applied statistics, or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum 2 year experience required in data analytics, preferrably in an educational setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft systems (Excel, Access PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency in a subset of the following: R, Stata, SPSS, PowerBI and/or Tableau.
  • Ability to collaboratively make decisions about reporting that will affect student career options and institutional accreditation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistics, choose appropriate statistical analyses for educational datasets, and communicate findings.
  • Understanding of undergraduate medical education expectations including accreditation standards from the LCME, competency-based assessment
  • Meticulous and efficient working habits with quick response time
  • Strong writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Collaborative with multi-disciplinary team, exhibits patience and willingness to learn as well as to teach others.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities, communicate timelines and adhere to them.
