Position Summary: 

Database Application/ETL Developer is responsible for developing database applications in Oracle RDBMS systems to aid application development under client-server/SOA architecture supporting business logic implementations, ETL operations, data replication, event-based data forwarding and queueing for databases operating in transactional and data warehousing environments. Database Application/ETL Developer will also take on responsibilities related to application performance and responsiveness to end users. This position requires technical level expertise as well as the ability to interface with users of all levels.

PCA is the fourth largest manufacturer of containerboard and corrugated packaging in United States and third largest producer of uncoated freesheet in North America.  PCA is an ideas and solutions company.  We are a leader in helping our customer package, transport and display products of all kinds.  PCA embodies a culture of continuous improvement and, as such, is dedicated to developing adaptable and reliable computing solutions.  The Database Application/ETL Developer is responsible for developing application code running on the Oracle RDBMS systems, which hosts PCA's proprietary applications across all business units, and developing ETL processes based on Linux/Oracle systems.

 

Principle Accountabilities: 

  • Architect efficient ER/data models and enhance and augment current models to support PCA's evolving business needs.
  • Interface with the business development teams during the data modeling efforts, logical and physical, to clarify the application design and ensure the best possible database structure.
  • Develop and maintain efficient database application modules to encapsulate business logic to meet both Corporate and Plant  requirements.
  • Provide and manage support for database application processes which collects, stores, propagates and aggregates data as scheduled.
  •  Monitor and optimize database application performance and identify and resolve any defects or deficiencies in a proactive manner to avoid unscheduled interruption in business operations.
  • Interact with database software vendors and their support centers to plan and ensure the business applications functions according to the users' expectations after applying necessary database upgrades and patches.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of project methodology to report and prioritize work to ensure all tasks and projects are completed in a timely manner and meet the business groups' needs.
  • Knows and follows policies and procedures of the company, shares information that would benefit other members of the team and finds ways to improve the delivery of service to our customers.

  • Work with the team to investigate, determine and help resolve application related issues in DBMS systems in a timely manner.

 

 

Decision Making:

The Database Application/ETL Developer is required to make independent decisions based on sound industry practices and existing corporate regulations.  The Database Application/ETL Developer is expected to drive performance of the team to meet goals.  The Database Application/ETL Developer is expected to take general directions, and from those directions make decisions as to his/her approach to completing assigned projects and is expected to determine how to operate and conduct assigned tasks within the established standards and procedures.

 

Interactions with Customers and Contacts

Internally, the Database Application/ETL Developer works closely with the application development team to execute assigned projects and provide backend database development expertise.  The Database Application/ETL Developer works closely with the application development team in carrying out complex projects and provides training and guidance to System Analysts.  The Database Application/ETL Developer has limited external interaction.  However, any interaction with customers and vendors is governed by PCA's business philosophy of meeting needs and exceeding expectations for customers and by PCA's Commitment to Service of doing what's right for our customers, focusing on strategies that add value and support growth, and keeping the promises that we make.

 

Position Requirements

  • College degree (B.S.) in computer science.
  • Multi-year database server-side application development experience with Oracle RDBMS required along with experience developing Bash programs on Linux.
  • Must possess skills to code subprograms, packages and web applications in PL/SQL.
  • Understanding of PL/SQL fundamentals and concepts like transactional control, data concurrency and consistency, dynamic sql, composite and instead of triggers, collections, error handling, autonomous transactions, distributed transactions, debugging, profiling and tracing modules is must.
  • Good understanding of SQL and constructing SQL statements native to Oracle systems required. Exposure to advanced/analytical sql functions and regular expressions is desired.
  • Exposure to XML DB, JSON, built-in PL/SQL packages and Advanced Queuing is a plus.
  • Familiar with Oracle utilities like SqlPlus, SQLoader, Data Pump and External Tables.
  • Experience writing Bash/PowerShell programs to manage database ETL processes.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues related to code execution, data aggregation, loading and replication issues, networking/connectivity issues, security issues etc.
  • Achiever, self-motivated, self-responsible, and accountable.
  • Ability to follow standard processes and communicate effectively with the team regarding technical, progress and critical issues.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving, organizational skills, and decision making skills oriented on obtaining desired results.
  • Willing to provide support in evenings and weekends and be available by company supplied phone.
