We're looking for a skilled and experienced Data Scientist to join the Center for Infectious Disease Modeling & Analytics and Training Hub (CIDMATH). CIDMATH is one of 13 Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to improve outbreak response using data, modeling, and advanced analytics for ongoing and future infectious disease threats and public health emergencies. Our focus includes developing methods, tools, and integrating existing and novel data streams for infectious disease modeling, coupled with offering state-of-the-art training for the modeling community.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Data Scientist is responsible for mining and analyzing data from various internal and external data sources to drive optimization and improvement of operations, clinical outcomes, and business strategies.
  • Works with stakeholders throughout the organization to drive business solutions and are adept at using large data sets and models to test the effectiveness of different courses of action using predictive algorithms.
  • They assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques.
  • Data Scientist is an expert in at least 1 programming language (e.g. R, SAS, Python), has proficiency in statistical theory and underlying mathematical distributions, and expertise in querying relational databases with SQL.
  • They have experience with of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc.) and can demonstrate real-world application of these techniques.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • As a Data Scientist, you will play a crucial role in developing tools and analyzing, interpreting, and managing data from wastewater surveillance of pathogens, including genomic data.
  • You will work closely with interdisciplinary teams of scientists to develop and apply bioinformatics tools and methodologies.
  • This position offers an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented and innovative individual to impact cutting-edge research and scientific advancements.
  • Tool Development:
    • Design and implement bioinformatics tools, pipelines, and algorithms to process and analyze data from pathogen wastewater surveillance.
    • This includes pathogen concentrations, spatiotemporal distribution, and genome sequence data.
  • Data Integration:
    • Integrate diverse datasets and utilize statistical and computational methods to extract meaningful biological insights.
  • Quality Control:
    • Implement quality control processes to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data analysis results.
  • Data Visualization, communication, and presentation:
    • Create clear and interpretable visualizations to communicate complex biological findings to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with biologists, public health investigators, and other scientists to address research questions and provide bioinformatics support.
  • Research and Development:
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest bioinformatics methodologies, tools, and technologies, and contribute to the development of new tools and research projects.
  • Documentation:
    • Maintain detailed documentation of analysis workflows, tools, and data resources.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or another quantitative field and 3 years of relevant experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field.
  • Experience in bioinformatics data analysis, tool development, and data interpretation.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R, and bash scripting.
  • Expertise in analyzing high-throughput sequencing data, including quality control.
  • Experience with pathogen genomics and/or metagenomics is preferred.
  • Strong statistical and data analysis skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology and genetics is a plus.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
