Job Description
The Utah Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity is seeking a talented data and Public Administration Fellow to support the office's Startup State Initiative. This new state initiative aims to help startups, small businesses, and entrepreneurs at every stage of business by unifying the state's entrepreneurial ecosystem, simplifying government processes and regulatory burdens, ensuring Utah's economic opportunity is equitably shared, and making impactful investments into access to capital for Utah small businesses.
The person hired for this position will be a Startup State Initiative team member and part of the Business Services team, which includes about 25 state workers. The job is part-time, up to 29 hours per week. There are no state employment benefits, but the office will provide necessary tools to accomplish the work, including a computer, City Creek office security credentials, and parking or public transportation access.
Depending on the team's needs, the person hired for this position may work in a hybrid on-site and remote work situation. We anticipate the fellow will complete most of their work as a remote worker.
Principal Duties
Work with the Startup State Initiative director to help improve Utah small business data collection and accuracy for underserved communities, including businesses in rural Utah, microenterprises, women-owned businesses, veteran-owned businesses, and multicultural-owned businesses. Work with the Startup State Initiative director to research and execute recommendations in the Startup State Initiative Strategic Plan.
Compile economic development data from multiple sources
Analyze and make recommendations from large datasets
Support the Startup State Initiative director in structuring data collection forms
Research recommendations related to business registration processes and the affordability and availability of health insurance for small businesses
Write policy briefs for each of these recommendations
Support the Startup State Initiative director in executing these recommendations
Duties include:
Support economic development data projects
Support the Startup State Initiative director with partnerships, as needed, to obtain crucial small business data
Help ensure small business data is protected
Research topics related to local and state government administration
Support the Startup State Initiative director with partnerships as needed
Work with the Startup State Initiative team as necessary to execute "all hands on deck" projects, including supporting the One Utah Summit and answering customer service inquiries
The ideal candidate will have the following:
Familiarity with working with economic development data; economics or quantitative background preferred
Comfortable analyzing and pulling information from large sets of data
Experience using data to draw conclusions and make recommendations
High-level strategic thinking
Ability to work with teams to accomplish team objectives
Able to communicate across multiple departments
Friendly, personable, and works well with others
Ability to come up with new ideas and develop programs to execute them
Familiarity with government administration
Skills in research methods, including vetting sources, synthesizing data, organizing information, and making meaningful conclusions
Experience working with Tableau would be ideal
Working knowledge of Google Apps and Microsoft Office Suite
Familiarity with Google Calendar, Google Meet, and Zoom
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Organized and process-oriented
Attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
