The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.
The Museum is seeking a part-time Data Collections Database Assistant, who will complete basic data entry and data clean-up in the Invertebrate Paleontology Collections Database, EMu. The collections include fossil marine invertebrates, such as trilobites, corals, echinoderms, bryozoans and molluscs.

The Museum is seeking a part-time Data Collections Database Assistant, who will complete basic data entry and data clean-up in the Invertebrate Paleontology Collections Database, EMu. The collections include fossil marine invertebrates, such as trilobites, corals, echinoderms, bryozoans and molluscs.
Job duties include:
- Completing accurate data entry in the EMu collections management system.
- Organizing and compiling collection information.
- Verifying accuracy of data through collection inventory.
- Reviewing and correcting data for deficiencies or errors.
The expected salary for the Data Collections Database Assistant is $20/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Previous computer data entry experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- College-level coursework in Geology, Biology, Paleontology or related field.
- Interest in management of natural history collections.
- Ability to learn new systems.
- Meticulous, thorough and detailed approach to work processes.
- Ability to work independently.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
- Occasionally must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
