Responsibilities
Portfolio Management is seeking a Data Analyst for the Catastrophe Exposure Management (CEM) and Excess & Surplus (E&S) teams. These are two newly centralized areas with tremendous potential - the analyst’s primary charge will be to bring data and programming expertise to support data-driven analysis across both of our functional areas. This role will drive CEM to be a market-differentiating capability for State Farm and enable further strategic execution on the E&S opportunity.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leads data collection and analytic activities for research projects and ad-hoc requests related to Catastrophe Exposure Management or Excess & Surplus lines
- Designs and submits programming to construct and aggregate data used for research and analysis projects
- Leverages programming languages & software to manipulate large amounts of data and extract insights & business value
- Develops maps and other visuals through the use of GIS or equivalent software
- Applies overarching technical knowledge to ensure quality, integration and governance across assigned work
- Continues to learn and develop understanding of new technologies/techniques used to perform responsibilities within the role
- Designs, maintains, and updates documentation of research data files, methods and processes
- Performs peer review and provides feedback on data pulls and analysis
- Develops and maintains cooperative business relationships with partners and customers both internal and external to State Farm
- Identifies and documents standards and best practices to promote consistency
Qualifications
An ideal candidate would possess the following:
- A background in a quantitative field, such as math, statistics, meteorology, computer science, finance, insurance, engineering, etc.
- Experience working with catastrophe risk or catastrophe-prone areas
- Understanding of personal lines, business lines, and E&S products and exposures
- Knowledge of catastrophe underwriting practices
- Experience working with and manipulating large amounts of data
- Strong initiative to help identify and seize opportunities to drive our catastrophe exposure management & E&S capabilities forward
- Experience with and strong knowledge of Excel, SQL, and at least one programming language (SAS, R, or Python preferred)
- Experience working with Fire data from AWS and/or PCADSS
- Knowledge of or experience with GIS data, mapping software, and spatial queries
- Strong communication and presentation skills with experience explaining technical concepts to a non-technical audience
- Ability to think strategically, critically, and creatively to solve unique and complex business problems that impact the organization
- High levels of adaptability and learning agility
- An understanding of emerging technologies, tools, and platforms, including cloud-based solutions, that will support and extend analytic solutions
