OpeningFull Time 40 hours Grade 092 CytologyScheduleFULL TIME DAY SHIFT M-F; NO ON CALL OR WEEKENDSResponsibilitiesPosition Summary:Cytopreparatory Technician prepares Cytology specimens for evaluation. Technician is responsible for accessioning and trouble-shooting select Cytology specimens. Technicians are responsible maintaining laboratory conditions, quality assurance practice and instrument maintenance in accordance with laboratory policies.Supervision and Direction Received: Works under the direction of the Cytopathology Chief Supervisor.Assignments and Responsibilities:GYN cytopreparation:* Prepares GYN specimens utilizing Hologic ThinPrep processors.Utilizes automated slide stainer and coverslipper.* Facilitates Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) testing, performed by Virology.* Performs preventive maintenance of instrumentation as required for efficient operation.Non-gyn cytopreparation:* Accessions and triages non-GYN specimens to determine appropriate method of preparation.* Prepares cell blocks and special stains slides as necessary.* Performs preventive maintenance of instrumentation as required for efficient operation.Additional daily operational responsibilities:* Maintains automated and manual stain setups.* Manages incoming specimens and collaborates with other departments to retrieve additional specimen.* Maintains Quality Assurance standards.Miscellaneous responsibilities:* Monitors and orders Laboratory supplies as needed.* Follows universal health and safety precautions.* Prepares additional specimens and re-preps for studies, projects, and teaching materials.* Facilitates additional diagnostic testing of Cytology specimens.* Performs annual physical inventory counts of supplies and reagents as required by Laboratory Administration.* Manages storage of residual specimens and discards appropriately.Qualifications:Must be licensed by the State of New York as a Clinical Laboratory Technician (ML/MLT).Functional Requirements:* Ability to identify and resolve problems identified in specimen preparation and/or registration.* Ability to pay attention to detail while multi-tasking.* Works well in a team environment* Functions effectively in a rapidly changing environment.General Requirements:* Effective interpersonal skills, and maintains a friendly and courteous professional manner at all times.* Excellent communication, and computer skills are essential.* Is able to prioritize lab turn-around time expectations and maintain focus while performing multiple tasks.* Punctuality and a good attendance record.* Adherence to all University, Division and Department policies.* Adherence to all laboratory safety procedures.* Professional discretion with confidential patient results.The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to advance the University's mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create - and Make the World Ever Better.
