Overview
The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.
The Electricity Security Group is currently seeking a Cyber Security Engineer with an interest and/or background in power systems and electrical grid resilience, or knowledge in cybersecurity for energy systems. The position will focus on making technical contributions to ongoing research projects in cybersecurity for energy delivery systems, writing technical papers and reports, and generating new ideas and research avenues. The desired engineer will:
  • Work well independently and with others, in diverse teams. This includes a willingness to accept mentorship, training, and assessment related to the application of NDE techniques.
  • Demonstrate potential to successfully support Laboratory-based R&D projects by providing high quality technical deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise with a focus on cybersecurity as it relates to operation of the electric grid including operations, markets, and planning.
  • Assist the development of new business by contributing to or leading small tasks.
  • Work with colleagues and external collaborators to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges facing the power industry and smart buildings.
  • Effectively communicate with senior engineers to ensure high-quality delivery of research projects on budget and on time.
  • Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, etc.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Actively participate in project planning, including preparation of experimental procedures and documentation of results.
  • Have computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and a capability and willingness to learn NDE data acquisition/analysis/modeling software
  • Have Experience with programming languages, such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Possess understanding of general cybersecurity principles, various technology solutions, and threat actor tactics, techniques, and procedures related to energy systems.
  • Knowledge of foundational threat intelligence principles with a demonstrated understanding of how to apply them.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts fundamental and applied research in various Cyber Security domain areas.
  • Researches and advances theories, techniques and approaches to secure computing, cyber resiliency, cyber defense and analysis, including the design and efficiency of algorithms and how humans interact with computers and computing processes as well as the methods used for experimentation in the Cyber Security domain.
  • Develops work products including new theories and technical advances in the field.
  • Produces and/or integrates solutions driven by exploratory analysis from complex architectures and data sets based on research of security trends, new methods, and techniques used in unauthorized access or misused use of data and systems.
  • Resulting from research and exploratory analysis, designs and develops novel and secure computational systems and components, including both hardware and software, with a focus on architectures, languages, applications, secure software design, secure hardware design, machine learning, reverse engineering, malicious software analysis, statistical modeling, formal methods and protocols.
  • Prepares and presents technical reports, reports, and/or publications.
  • May interface with external entities including law enforcement, intelligence and other government organizations and agencies.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA or higher

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or Cybersecurity.
  • Knowledge of foundational threat intelligence principles with a demonstrated understanding of how to apply them.
  • Knowledge of define, describe, and predict behavior for discoveries in cyber systems and software applications.
  • Knowledge of fundamental and applied research in various Cyber Security domain areas. Research and advances theories, techniques and approaches to advance the field of cybersecurity applied to energy delivery systems and ICS.
  • Understanding of general cybersecurity principles, various technology solutions, and threat actor tactics, techniques, and procedures related to energy systems.
