Job description

SUMMARY

Incumbents holding this position perform a full range of project work including the development and implementation of the CVB’s PUBLIC RELATIONS plan. He/she will plan, direct and coordinate the PUBLIC RELATIONS efforts of the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) by performing the following duties personally or in conjunction with additional staff or contracted providers.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following, other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with media including, but not limited to print, digital, freelance journalists, bloggers, and influencers. Update and manage media database in CVB’s CRM.
  • Fulfill media requests for information, photos, and video.
  • Write media releases, story ideas, fact sheets, media advisories, tailored pitches, sponsored content, and other information as related to the PUBLIC RELATIONS efforts of the bureau.
  • Maintain the media room at tupelo.net including earned media coverage, image galleries, and new information.
  • Plan and coordinate individual media visits and group press trips. NOTE: This often means hosting media after normal business hours and on the weekend.
  • Work directly with Tupelo CVB’s PUBLIC RELATIONS agency to execute annual PUBLIC RELATIONS strategy and narratives.
  • Assist TCVB staff with special projects and promoting niche markets to the media.
  • Assist with copywriting, editing, and proofreading of collateral produced by Tupelo CVB.
  • Assist with crisis communications by updating Tupelo CVB’s crisis communications plan twice a year and distributing the plan to key contacts.
  • Attend media marketplace events to promote Tupelo’s tourism product to key travel media.
  • Prepares activity reports to show return on investment in PUBLIC RELATIONS.
  • Maintain involvement in SATW, PRSA and other professional organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in a related field of study is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related professional experience is preferred.


OFFICE SKILLS

  • Must operate standard office equipment and personal computers.
  • Must present an organized office that perpetuates a staff and guest friendly environment.
  • Ability to multi-task in order to meet deadlines.
  • Computer literate in applicable software (Internet, Microsoft word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and able to learn new software as needed. Experience in both PC and MAC platforms preferred.
  • Writing and copy-editing experience.


LANGUAGE

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports or government regulations.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write letters and/or articles or publications that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or governmental officials.
  • Must speak and write the English language fluently.


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Engage in decisions related to PUBLIC RELATIONS and management in a prompt and decisive manner during normal and/or crisis situations. Plans, coordinates, and directs varied and complex administrative operations.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the work may involve lifting, pulling, pushing, positioning or through the use of tools exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally (6-33% of the work day); and lifting, pulling, pushing, positioning or through the use of tools exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently (34-66% 0f the work day).
  • The work may involve overhead work occasionally.
  • The work may involve standing, walking and bending at the waist frequently; and sitting, squatting, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders, stairs or other means of equipment ingress and egress, and driving a standard motor vehicle.
  • The work may involve use of the hands for simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation of objects, tools (including power tools), controls and equipment frequently, and repetitively occasionally.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATION

  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Possess proof of valid insurance if operating a vehicle on behalf of CVB.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • The employee may occasionally be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme heat and cold.
  • The noise level work environment is usually moderate.
  • With entertainment and crowd management being one of the many aspects of this industry, occasional extremely loud noise levels are present in the work environment. There are also times of low light intensity.
  • Must assist with emergency and/or crisis management aspects of the facility when warranted.
