General Summary
The City Treasurer's Office is seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as a Customer Service Ambassador who is highly motivated and who strives for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.
The preferred hiring range for this position is between $15.00 - $18.25 hourly ($31,200.00 - $37,960.00 Annually.) Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This position performs responsible clerical/administrative support and Customer Service work. This position is stationed at the front entrance of City Hall and is the first point of contact involving greeting, assisting, and providing direction/information to customers, members of the community, and other visitors of City Hall; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work is done under regular supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications. Reports to a designated member of the Office of the Treasurer.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Greets customers, members of the community, and other visitors of the city and determines purpose of visit.
  • Provides direction or information to visitors and/or directs or escorts to the appropriate individual or department.
  • Answers phones in a professional manner; screens and directs phone calls to appropriate staff; takes messages and may schedule appointments.
  • Responds courteously and promptly to customer inquiries in person and by telephone; answers questions about City services and functions.
  • Helps to maintain workplace security by issuing, checking, and collecting badges as necessary, and maintaining visitor logs.
  • Operates computer, calculator, and other standard office equipment.
  • Receives, opens, sorts, signs for, and/or distributes mail, deliveries, or packages; may assist with bulk mailings.
  • Reports problems or concerns to supervisor.
  • Performs administrative and clerical support tasks.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • At least three (3) months of Customer Service experience; preferably in a front desk, receptionist, or similar role.
  • Must be willing and able to work with the general public in an open office setting.
Skills: Basic understanding of standard office and clerical procedures, practices, systems, and equipment. Basic understanding of Customer Service methods and procedures. Basic knowledge of departmental and city procedures. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to establish and follow detailed work procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships employees, customers, and the public. Interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly. Excellent verbal communication skills, active listening skills, and understanding of departments and resources available in the city and community. Basic computer skills and data entry abilities, and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Skill to use a variety of office machines and equipment.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information
Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: SEDENTARY WORK: Ability to lift up to 10 lbs. occasionally and/or negligible amount of weight frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
The majority of time spent in this position involves inside work. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

        • POS 1: Employee-only premium of $36.28 per biweekly pay
        • POS 2: Employee-only premium of $13.02 per biweekly pay
          • (Dependent coverage is available but the cost of the premium is not subsidized.)
  • Prescription Card ($10 generic, $30 lower cost name brand, $55 higher cost name brand)
  • Mail Order Maintenance Prescription Drug Program ($20 generic, $60 lower cost name brand, $110 higher cost brand)

    3. RETIREMENT: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan.
    • Pension:
      • Choose from two options:
        • A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
        • A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note that: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees)
