Job Description
JOB TITLE: Custodian/Bus Driver
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age of 21 years; high school diploma or GED required; possess a valid Washington State school bus driver's certificate; possess a valid state driver's permit with the appropriate endorsement; meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities of a bus driver/custodian as described in this job description; have a minimum of two years driving experience; experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, janitorial/custodial or equivalent.
NATURE OF POSITION: The incumbent of this position shall operate a school bus in a safe fashion to insure children are transported safely and efficiently to and from school; and assists and/or performs work of a semi-skilled nature in the maintenance, repair and remodeling of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment; keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas, neat and clean at all times.
REPORTS TO: Maintenance/Custodial/Grounds Supervisor and Transportation Supervisor.
JOB GOAL: Operates school buses under all types of weather conditions, including but not limited to: fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice. Transports students and other authorized persons over regular "to and from school" routes, and on field, extracurricular and special or extra activity trips as authorized by the Transportation Manager. Assists in the maintenance of buildings, equipment and grounds. Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance duties regarding a limited knowledge of various trade skills such as carpentry, electrical, painting, etc. Position may work either independently in routine maintenance assignments or under the technical direction of a journeyman. Provides students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.
REQUIRED CAPABILITIES:
A. Sufficient command of the English language to communicate with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities. Some Spanish preferred.
B. Must possess sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to
enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door.
C. Sufficient strength and agility to move about in an overturned bus as required to provide
assistance to students in evacuating the bus.
D. Hearing capability must be sufficient to detect and distinguish traffic sounds occurring
from any direction outside the bus, such as horns, whistles, sirens, trains, bells, etc., from a
distance which will allow adequate time for defensive or evasive action to avoid a hazardous
situation.
E. Vision - 20/40 in best eye, with or without correction; approximately 140 degrees peripheral, which as a single criteria shall not be excluding; and depth perception adequate to reasonably determine distance and closing rate of other moving vehicles from a stationary or moving school bus; eye coordination to avoid diplopia; color vision must be adequate to distinguish the colors of red, green and amber of a traffic light.
F. Be approved by the district bus driver trainer to drive the bus competently.
G. Pass the DOT driver's physical.
H. Obtain first aid and CPR training.
I. Be approved by the district bus driver trainer to drive the bus competently.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Drive a school bus on scheduled routes and/or on all types of trips in support of district approved activities, both within and outside the school district boundaries.
B. Service, inspect and clean school buses and related equipment as required by state and
district policy.
C. Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety. Report unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of any person other than the driver.
D. Complete forms, records and reports as required by the state or local school district policies.
E. Successfully complete school bus driver training programs and courses established by the state superintendent of public instruction or the school district.
F. Operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies promulgated by the superintendent of public instruction.
G. Perform other school bus driver related duties as directed by local school district policies.
H. Operate and service all school bus equipment and accessories, including but not limited to: fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, snow chains, sanders, first aid kits, etc.
I. Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus and all related equipment.
J. Clean and service the school bus to include interior/exterior sweeping and washing; installation of fuel, oil and coolant; tire inflation, etc.
K. Operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State or district school bus specifications.
L. Perform basic first aid as appropriate, which may include CPR.
M. Legible, timely and accurate completion of forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route studies, trouble reports, misconduct reports, accident reports, and other clerical type activities as may be required.
N. Repairs and improves buildings, equipment and grounds, and to plan, direct, and do work on building maintenance projects.
O. Handles requisitions for repairs, replacements, and maintenance of buildings and equipment under the direction of the building and grounds supervisor.
P. Prepares a list of maintenance and custodial supplies to the maintenance and grounds supervisor.
Q. Assists in the maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical, mechanical and structural
systems of buildings, grounds, and utility distribution.
R. May assist journeyman tradesmen by performing duties related to carpentry, painting, plastering, plumbing, steam fitting, mechanical or electrical work, refrigeration maintenance, machinists trades, etc.
S. Assists in the fabrication of equipment and materials constructed in accordance with project requirements.
T. Operates power tools and equipment; operates automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies.
U. May attend technical training courses.
V. Performs related duties as required.
W. Be able to perform job tasks as follows:
1. Lift and carry 10-50 lbs. frequently.
2. Assist with lifting 100 lbs. occasionally.
3. Load and unload products from vehicles of various heights from 3-5 feet.
4. Use push and pull methods to move products in the work area.
5. Store products requiring arm extension, straight and overhead reaching, kneeling,bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
6. Work from an awkward position to accomplish cleaning of equipment.
7. Be on feet the majority of the work shift.
8. Be of general good health.
9. Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
10. The noise level in the work environment ranges from low to high.
11. The employee will work near or with mechanical equipment.
X. Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
Y. Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.
Z. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
AA. Sweeps, mops, and vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
BB. Cleans corridors after school each day and during the day when their condition requires it.
CC. Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects bathroom floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
DD. Washes all windows, both inside and outside, at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
EE. Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
FF. Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
GG. Assumes responsibility for opening and closing of the building each school day and for
determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except
those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
HH. Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
II. Keeps an inventory of supplies and equipment, and requisitions such needed replacements.
JJ. Reports immediately to the principal any damage to school property and any major repairs needed.

LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: Reports to Maintenance/Custodial/Grounds Supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
LENGTH: 190 contract days (includes10 paid holidays)
SCHEDULE: 8 hours per day, split shift position-As determined by the Maintenance/Custodial/Grounds Supervisor.
SALARY: As determined by the collective bargaining agreement.
EVALUATION: By the Maintenance/Custodial/Grounds Supervisor by May 1st of each year.
