CUSTODIAL POSITION VACANCY
POSITION: NIGHT CUSTODIAN
SCALE: CU1
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or it's Equivalent
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE: The Night Custodian will perform custodial work required for the routine cleaning, maintenance, and operation of the area to which they are assigned by the Building Administrator, the Custodial Supervisor, the Assistant Custodial Supervisor or the Head Custodian of the building.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provide a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean environment to ensure full and productive use of district facilities.
2. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
3. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
4. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
5. Appropriately operate all equipment and machinery as required.
6. Support the value of an education.
7. Perform indoor, routine and detailed cleaning and sanitation tasks using electric and manual cleaning equipment, chemicals and solvents.
8. Perform landscaping tasks using motorized, manual and/or electric cutting/trimming equipment in hot and cold weather conditions.
9. Read, comprehend and interpret instructions outlining the proper use of cleaning solvents, chemicals, and equipment to assure their safe application.
10. Verbal acumen essential to communicate with others.
11. Comprehend and comply with verbal and written instructions.
12. Climb ladders to heights up to 12 feet in the performance of specific cleaning and/or light maintenance tasks.
13. Walk up and down stairs with heavy loads p to 50 pounds.
14. Lift objects with weights up to 100 pounds.
15. Physically capable of the repetitive arm, back and leg motions persistently over an hour or greater using outdoor and indoor cleaning/grounds equipment.
16. Work with cleaning chemicals to remove mold as well as bloodborne pathogens while using personal protective equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
2. Must demonstrate proper mixing techniques for cleaning chemicals.
3. Must demonstrate proper operating procedures for the use of custodial equipment including buffer/speed buffer, gym finish applicator, weed eater, power mowers, air blower, and snow blower.
4. Must demonstrate proper techniques for stripping floors and shampooing carpets.
5. Must be available for and able to perform snow removal as required.
6. Day Custodian should be honest, dependable, show initiative and be able to work well with fellow employees and the public. Should be physically able to perform assigned duties.

Procedure Guidelines -

1. Vacuum carpet daily using a 20 lb. vacuum for 3 hours.
2. Collect and lift waste paper and debris of 2 lbs, and put in container daily (lifting above one's head).
3. Must be able to wear rubber gloves while cleaning restrooms.
4. Must be able to go up and down stairs frequently during the workday.
5. Must be able to lift 75 lbs. tables while cleaning the cafeteria.
6. Must be able to climb 8 to 12 ft. ladder to install burned out lights.
7. Must have visual ability to inspect work for cleanliness.
8. Must move a 90 lb. floor machine over floor surfaces and up and down stairs.
9. Must move a heavy water 9 lb. mop over floor surfaces
10. Must be able to reach 2 ft. above head to dust and do windows.
11. Must move furniture from 15 lbs. to 50 lbs. to clean.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Cleaning Tasks:
2. Clean all floor areas. Vacuum carpet, oil mop tile and damp mop as required.
3. Clean all corridors, hallways, and stairways every night. Damp mop when necessary.
4. Clean restrooms, shower rooms, locker rooms and dressing rooms by wet mopping nightly using germicidal detergent. All stools, urinals, sinks, mirrors, floors, and fixtures should be cleaned. Refill towel, tissue and soap dispensers as required.
5. Clean chalkboard rails daily.
6. Clean chalkboards at least twice a week. Rooms, where chalkboards are used often, may have to be cleaned more frequently.
7. Clean work counters and sinks in classrooms daily.
8. Clean office areas daily.
9. Clean drinking fountains daily.

I. Night Activities:

1. Prepare designed areas for night activities. Render minimum assistance for night activity so that time is allowed for regular cleaning.
2. Clean up following night activities.

II. Report Building Needs/Repairs

1. Elementary Custodians should understand the heating system well enough to detect faulty operation and report any problems as required. In a secondary school, this is the responsibility of the Head Day/Night Custodian.
2. All elementary Custodians and Head Custodians should know the location of shut-off valves for gas, water and electricity in case of emergency.
3. Any condition requiring repair should be reported to the Office.

III. Building Security:

1. Unauthorized personnel is not to be admitted to the building. Notify the Security Department in the event of a problem.
2. At the end of a shift, make a thorough check of the building to determine that all doors and windows are secured.

IIII. Other Responsibilities:

1. Check each day with Building Administrator or Head Custodian for any specific or unusual jobs that may need to be completed.
2. Replace light bulbs as required throughout the building.
3. Assist in the removal of snow or ice from sidewalks and steps during and after snowfalls. A bulletin is sent to Custodians each year explaining the procedures to be followed in regard to arrival time and other procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (also see Physical Demands Checklist, attached)
While performing duties all Plant Department custodial positions are physically demanding and require the ability to lift up to 100 lb., work off of ladders/scaffold, work in confined areas with frequent stretching, twisting, and bending. Specific job categories may be more strenuous and may require different physical abilities, but all jobs incorporate the above requirements.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS:
The work setting involves performance in a school environment both indoors and outdoors. You will work with various levels of staff and students.
