THE POSITION
With supervisor approval, incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however, they must physically reside within the Sacramento region or have the ability to regularly report to a City of Sacramento physical worksite with little notice.
This single-position classification is responsible for the creation, development, and evaluation of the interpretive and educational programming at the City of Sacramento's Crocker Art Museum. The position is responsible for developing and implementing an annual plan designed to promote student, adult, educator, and family programs of the highest quality, author new products, and manage resources. The position provides leadership and strategic direction to the Education staff, and works closely with members of the senior management team towards the fulfillment of the institutional vision and mission. The Curator of Education is the primary liaison between the Art Museum and various external constituencies, working to attract and retain diverse audiences and cultivate participation in and contributions to the Museum.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General supervision is provided by the Director of the Crocker Art Museum. Administrative supervision is provided by the Director of Convention, Culture and Leisure. Responsibilities include direct and indirect supervision of full-time, contractual, intern, and volunteer staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Develops strategic plans, annual business plans, and budgets for the education division; establishes priorities for meeting long-range and short-term goals; determines budgetary requirements to reduce cost of services; and monitors progress towards strategic and annual goals.
- Provides strong leadership; serves as the organization's expert on formal and informal education; reviews, develops, and improves the Museum's education offerings; fosters the perception of the Crocker Art Museum as an innovative educational organization and a national leader in gallery-based education.
- Supervises, assigns, directs, and reviews the work of subordinate staff.
- Directs the enhancement and expansion of electronic/new media and evaluation of Educational programs.
- Promotes positive and cooperative collaborations among the Museum staff to achieve desired results for product and program development; and builds strong working relationships with senior management team.
- Maintains a high level of expertise in museum operations and trends.
- Participates in fundraising initiatives that increase education support, user access, and product and program delivery.
- Acts as a public spokesperson for the institution on education matters; and serves on institutional committees and teams as appropriate.
- Develops, directs, and maintains a variety of internal and external relationships, programmatic collaborations, and partnerships with local, regional and national groups and organizations to insure fulfillment of Educational strategies.
- Provides exceptional customer services to those contacted in the course of work.
- Collaborates with marketing and other staff to communicate and develop the Museum's education identity; identifies and cultivates new audience opportunities; develops new programs; and works to improve the visitor experience.
- Other duties may be performed as required; not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual holding this classification.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of museum operations.
- Principles and practices of curriculum design and development
- Principles of personnel administration, current office management and supervisory methods and practices.
- Principles and practices of gallery-based art education.
- Theories, history, and practice of museum education.

- Proficient use of modern office equipment, including computers, computer applications, and software.

- Prepare and present clear and concise reports.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, volunteers, and a diverse public.
- Effectively plan, develop, and implement a comprehensive education program with a broad scope and high degree of complexity.
- Accurately assess organizational issues and opportunities.
- Prepare, implement, and manage budgets.
- Work in a demanding environment, requiring flexibility and creative problem solving abilities.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Experience:
Five years of progressively responsible experience in an art museum or related organization, including one or more years of managerial-level experience.
Education:
Possession of a Bachelor's degree from a four-year accredited college or university with a major in art history, arts administration, art education, museum studies, museum management or a closely related field. A Master's degree in Museum Education is highly desirable.
PROOF OF EDUCATION
Proof of Education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment. Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.
An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of Education records will be due at time of appointment.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Driver License:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
