GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
The Curator in Charge is the leader of the Museum's department dedicated to Arms and Armor, one of the most comprehensive and encyclopedic collections of its kind, with collection strengths in European, Islamic, and Asian objects. It is unique in the structure of the Museum in having its own armory, led by conservators who are also armorers. The department is at a critical moment in its history, embarking on a significant renovation of its spaces and re-thinking the narratives it presents to its audiences. You will take the curatorial lead in the implementation of this reinstallation, and the programming that will stem from it. At the same time, you will continue with the traditional work of the department, including leading staff in proposing acquisitions, organizing exhibitions, conserving objects, and conducting research on the collection.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Lead and motivate a department of curators, conservators, collections managers and administrators to finalize and implement the plan for the reinstallation of the permanent galleries and related educational and public programming.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships to donors, supporters, collectors and scholars.
  • Collaborate with curators and conservators within the department and elsewhere in the museum to formulate exhibition and installation plans that open up new areas for interpretation and study, and new ways of enhancing visitor engagement.
  • Lead the department to acquire works of art that are the finest and most significant of their kind, with a global reach.
  • Provide oversight for staff management and administration of the department

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Ph.D. in Art History with a concentration in relevant field preferred
  • Ten years' experience related to the duties and responsibilities
  • Recognized achievement for expertise and scholarship in the field
  • Good working knowledge of languages within the field of expertise
  • Strong record of publications in the field
  • Experience of managing a staff with a variety of skills and functions
  • Demonstrated record of building strong relationships with donors and collectors and good working relationships with other experts in the field
  • Demonstrated experience in accomplishing original research
  • Ability to plan, organize and present exhibitions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access (DEIA) in the field
  • Museum experience preferred

COMPENSATION RANGE:
  • Pay Range : $220,000 - $250,000 /Annually
  • The advertised pay scale reflects the good faith minimum and maximum salary range for this role. The advertised pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage for any specific employee. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.

Location Requirements
At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. "Commuting distance" means that they are located in one of following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the "Tri-state and PA" areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
