Job description

Job Summary:

Coordinates the implementation of "culture as medicine" within the Grand Ronde Health and Wellness Center, specifically the Public Health Department, and develops larger programs for the Grand Ronde Community.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans and coordinates Cultural Wellness and language-based activities for targeted demographics of the Grand Ronde community.
  • Participates in Good Medicine events.
  • Maintains and publishes a calendar of cultural and wellness activities, special events, and other programs and services of interest to community members and/or employees.
  • Assists public health staff with the implementation of Public Health Modernization core strategies, including those related to environmental health, community health, staff recruitment/development/retention, disease prevention, maternal/infant/early childhood health, and other strategies as determined by the Public Health Modernization grant coordinator.
  • Assists Behavioral Health staff in developing and implementing prevention-based Cultural Wellness groups to targeted demographics of the Grand Ronde community.
  • Assists with developing culturally relevant curriculum and programming for the tribal Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood (MIECHV) grant.
  • Collaborates with the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board for technical assistance on tribal community-based research, including surveys, evaluations, and other research-based tasks.
  • Prepares culturally relevant public health programmatic materials to GRHWC staff as requested.
  • Works with other departments to integrate the chinuk wawa language immersion curriculum for Grand Ronde Health and Wellness Staff.
  • Assists with Environmental Health related activities.
  • Coordinates water-based prevention activities in collaboration with outside non-profit agencies, tribal governments, and other relevant entities.
  • Collaborates with tribal departments to ensure quality and accuracy of delivery of cultural materials and programming for GRHWC.
  • Assists in the development, upkeep, and implementation of programming in the GRHWC collaborative Native plant educational garden.
  • Assists the staff dietitian in developing culturally relevant food sovereignty classes and assists in the implementation of first foods in diet-related interventions.
  • Coordinates Cultural Wellness programming and public health prevention programs for the Behavioral Health "Village" shelter program, Women's Transitional Living Center, and other transitional living programs in the Grand Ronde community.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED. Associates is preferred.
  • Two (2) years of previous work experience with cultural education, language, or community health education.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Driving Requirements:

  • This position may require driving.

Qualifications,Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Ability to follow directions and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work with children.
  • Proficiency in Chinuk Wawa is preferred, or the ability to collaborate with the Chinuk Wawa language department.
  • Must have graphic design skills and ability to create curriculum, training materials, etc.
  • Requires excellent customer relations skills.
  • Previous grant management or implementation experience preferred.
  • General knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of public health foundational capabilities and evidence-based best practices in the field of tribal public health.
  • Hours of work may vary depending on events.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture is required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
  • Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
