ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY: The Culinary Development Assistant is a self-starter and has excellent communication and leadership skills. They should have organization skills, the ability work independently, and to positively interact with other students, faculty and staff. Foundation prefers candidates with relevant professional experience, demonstrated writing and research skills, and a can-do-attitude. We seek a creative candidate who will find a way, and take initiative.
ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Foundation offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
The Foundation also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Foundation and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Norman J. Priest Scholarship. In addition, the Foundation administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Foundation contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
The Culinary Development Assistant will work hand in hand with the Chef and be responsible for performing specific tasks and duties assigned within the kitchen and in the office. The assistant will aid in documentation, research, experimentation, and testing of new products. As well as obtaining feedback on food and service quality.
  • Assist managers/supervisors/designees in launching new and innovating products by providing technical expertise in research and product development.
  • Assist directly in product research and development to collect and test samples, analyze, cost, optimize, large portfolio of products within food and disposables categories
  • Act as 3rd party liaison to request vendor inquiries on product information
  • Assist in trialing new and existing products, ingredients and processes
  • Participate in sensory testing of food and manufactured products.
  • Participates in product and quality improvement initiatives
  • Continually updating standard operation procedures
  • Prepare and submits reports and provides regular updates to management on project status
  • Utilize software system and spreadsheets to enter data analysis of volume weights, measurements and product information
  • Coordinating employee appreciation events

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent general education degree (GED)
  • Sophomore or junior standing preferred.
  • Nutrition and culinary background
  • Mathematical experience a plus

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Organized and detailed
  • Ability to grasp technical concepts quickly
  • Ability to work under pressure and produce high volume and quick service.
  • Must be customer oriented with good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn other software programs.
  • Ability to work in various test kitchens learning the use of spreadsheets, food prep equipment, including kitchen sanitation and safety standards
  • Highly detailed-orientation, able to work independently, multi-task enjoy interfacing with other staff at all levels to ensure
  • Physical requirements include standing for long periods of time; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; clear verbal and written communication skills; reaching, some positions may require the lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Provide and receives open and honest feedback in a constructive manner
  • Ability to use food prep equipment using safe practices
  • Experienced with weights and volume measurements and conversions with food
