BID DENOTES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT EMPLOYEES WHO ARE
CURRENTLY MEMBERS OF THE BARGAINING UNIT THAT REPRESENTS THE BID POSTION.

Title: Crafts Instructor (M)
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under general supervision, responsible for developing, teaching and leading craft activities for the Park District in one or more areas of specialization, including woodcraft, lapidary, upholstery or ceramics. Performs related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Plans and implements a course curricula for the instruction of craft activities in one or more related areas of specialization. Provides instruction and supervision for Park District patrons involved in cultural recreation and leisure activities. Demonstrates proper techniques and skills for craft activities. Adapts programs to reflect differing levels of participant skill development. Enforces and promotes safety guidelines for cultural recreation and leisure activities.
Develops, promotes and organizes craft groups, clubs, displays, exhibits and demonstrations sponsored by the Park District. Collaborates with recreation staff or other Park District personnel on special projects, including day camp programs. Encourages creativity in participants. Communicates constructively with participants, parents, volunteers and the community. Consults with individuals and community groups to determine their recreation interests, needs and desires.
Issues and maintains an inventory of equipment, tools, supplies and other materials used in craft programs. Determines and provides instruction in the proper use of equipment, tools and supplies in a specialty area, including but not limited to tablesaws, bandsaws, lathes, routers (woodcraft), kilns and potter's wheels (ceramics), lapidary slitter and shaping wheel, staple guns and foam stretchers (upholstery). Sets up and prepares craft equipment, machinery and projects. Supervises unorganized play and enforces Park District rules and regulations at assigned locations. Attends workshops and in-service training seminars. Stays abreast of current methods, techniques and trends in craft specialties. Judges at competitions and special events.
Performs general administrative duties, including but not limited to assisting in course registration, collection of fees, routine record keeping and promoting craft programs. May solicit wood and other material donations from local businesses and other organizations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience:
A Career Certificate from an accredited technical school or apprenticeship program in Carpentry; an Associate of Applied Science Degree, Associate of Sciences Degree or two full years of coursework from an accredited college or university in Building Construction Technology, Industrial Arts or a closely related field, or, graduation from High School or the equivalent (GED) and three full years of related instruction or practical experience in a recreation or business environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of one or more craft disciplines including, but not limited to woodcraft, lapidary, upholstery and ceramics. Elementary knowledge of leisure and recreation theories and principles. Effective oral and written communication skills. Skill in the use of craft machinery, equipment and tools, such as tablesaws, bandsaws, routers, kilns and potter's wheels, lapidary slitter and shaping wheel, staple guns and foam stretchers. Skill in teaching one or more related areas of specialization.
