ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
Deschutes County Justice Court is a state court administered by Deschutes County, under the direction of the Justice of the Peace. Justice Court serves as the municipal court for Sisters and Redmond. Court sessions are held in Redmond, Sisters and La Pine.

ABOUT THE JOB:
This position works under basic supervision to provide courtroom assistance services in multiple locations, as well as providing office support, clerical and cashier duties in support of the operations of the Justice Court. The position also provides standard Court technical assistance for the public.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Performs basic clerical, legal and administrative duties in accordance with Justice Court procedures and County policy, including data entry, multi-line phone reception, cashiering, records keeping, preparing and processing a variety of Court documents, and maintaining files.
  • Assists in the administration of the Justice Court in accordance with the laws of the State of Oregon; conveys Court policies, procedures and Judge's orders; suggests and provides solutions to Court clients within the limits of Court rules, procedures, polices, legislation, Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles and the Oregon Revised Statutes; maintains confidentiality of Court records and proceedings.
  • Provides Court information and customer services; answers questions as primary point of contact for customers; assists customers with Court procedures, payments, forms, small claims filings, uniform citations and complaints for multiple cities and the county; responds to requests for information within the scope of authority and training.
  • Demonstrates initiative and a professional demeanor when interacting with members of the public, county staff and other agencies.
What You Will Bring:
Knowledge of or experience with:
  • County policies and procedures; Court functions, procedures, terminology, rules and policies including the release of information from Court records.
  • Applicable state and federal rules, city codes, county ordinances and regulations.
  • Principles of record keeping, bookkeeping, money handling, case files and records management.
Skill in:
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing specialized software(s); various methods of data entry performed with speed and accuracy.
  • Accurately and efficiently handling individual legal cases and monetary transactions on a daily basis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills including effectively handling hostile, angry and emotional customers.
  • Prioritizing tasks simultaneously and efficiently, both in a team setting and independently.

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;

  • AND one (1) year of clerical experience, preferably in a Court or law enforcement environment;

  • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
    Preference will be given for:

  • Two years experience in a Court or law enforcement environment.
Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certification from the State of Oregon is required within six months of hire.
Must have dependable transportation and be able and willing to drive throughout Deschutes County in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the ability to work in an office that is environmentally controlled; possess sufficient hand coordination to perform keyboarding and data entry; arm/hand movements to retrieve work materials and operate a variety of general office equipment; and an ability to sit, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, reach, stand, grasp, talk, hear, see, and lift up to 10 pounds on an occasional basis.Employment Type: Regular, full time, full benefits
