General Information
  • Annual Leave Accrual of up 22 workdays, or 6.77 hours accrued per biweekly pay period, total of 176 hours, based on full time employment/compensated hours.
  • Annual Leave Redemption:The option to cash out up to 100 hours of accrued unused annual leave per year, based on established guideline and IRS requirement.
  • Deferred Compensation: Section 457 Plan and/or 401(k) Shared Savings Plan with up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions.
  • Health Plans:You are afforded a flexible credit of up to $800 biweekly for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans, depending on coverage tier and eligibility.

Under general supervision, the interpreter works under oath and in accordance with the Standards of Judicial Administration, recommended by the Judicial Council, providing Spanish interpreting/translating services on an assigned and as needed basis for parties to proceedings, including witnesses, defendants, attorneys, other court personnel, and members of the public.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a single level classification. Employees in this classification perform consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings, as well as sight translation. Employees also provide written translation of documents for court use as directed.
Examples of Duties (With or Without Reasonable Accommodations)
Interprets from and to English and Spanish using simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation modes during court proceedings, for Spanish speaking individuals.
Interprets for judges, attorneys and other court personnel during court proceedings at the direction of the court.
Notifies the court of any issues or situations that may impede the interpreter's performance.
Researches and understands the functions of the court and the terminology used in court which may include but not be limited to, legal, technological, scientific, and/or medical terminology.
Perform other duties for the department as assigned such as coordinating daily office activities.

Education: Completion of High School education, or its equivalent
Certification: Possession of a current and valid certification as "Certified Court Interpreter" issued by the Judicial Council of California on behalf of the State of California in the Spanish language.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to orally convey the meaning from and into English and Spanish language by interpreting in the simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation modes.
  • Ability to accurately convey meaning, without editing, summarizing, adding meaning, or omitting, ability to interpret impartially.

  • Knowledge of culture and customs of the groups and communities using specified language.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to use office equipment including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, fax, and assisted-listening devices, as required by the assignment.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to all California statutes, Rules of Court, and applicable personnel rules concerning court interpretation.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to interpreter ethics and standards as stipulated in California Rules of Court Rule 984.4, Professional Conduct for Interpreters.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for full time, part time, regular, extra-help or fixed term positions.

In addition to your annual salary, Ventura Superior Court offers you an extensive benefits package, including:
FLEXIBLE BENEFIT PROGRAM: Employees can allocate the Court's biweekly flexible credit contribution among several benefit options.
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Plans: These plans are available for you and your eligible and applicable dependents to enroll.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts: Allows you to set aside a portion of your earnings up to certain IRS allowable amount to be deducted from your pay check before taxes. This in return increase your spending power by reimbursing you for IRS approved dependent care and health care expenses.
  • Pre-tax Salary Reduction: Portion of the flexible benefit allowance used to pay for medical, dental or vision is excluded from your taxable earnings.
  • Cash Back: Unused portionof the flexible benefit allowance will be added to your biweekly taxable pay, depending on the selection you have made.
EMPLOYEE HEALTH SERVICES CLINIC: Available to you for treatment of minor illness or injury.
13 PAID HOLIDAYS: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln's Birthday , Presidents' Day, Cesar Chaves' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Holiday time is pro-rated for permanent part-time employees.
PAID VACATION: 22 days earned each year, increasing in increments after 5 years of service to 32 days per year after 15 years of service. Part-time hours and absence of time not worked shall cause said pay period's accrual of annual leave credits to be reduced on a pro-rata basis. May accumulate up to 480 hours. May elect to redeem a portion of the accrual annually, if eligibiliy requirements are met.
TEXTBOOK AND TUITION: Upon meeting requirements, you may be reimbursed up to a certain amount per fiscal year for tuition and books for off-duty, job-related courses.
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Ventura Superior Court may provide up to a 5% incentive pay for educational attainment if not specifically required by your job. You may only receive one form of incentive pay or premium pay and will receive that which provides the greatest incentive.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PROGRAM: You may choose to contribute to one or both of the County's deferred compensation plans (established under Internal Revenue Code Sections 401(k) and 457). If you participate in the Ventura County sponsored 401(k) plan, the court will match a part of your contribution, on a pay period basis. You must be regularly scheduled to work at least 40 hours each pay period to be eligible to participate in the 401(k) plan. These plans enable you to build long-term savings while deferring current federal and state income taxes. In addition to pre-tax contributions, you are also able to make after-tax contributions through the Roth option available in the 457 plan.
RETIREMENT/SOCIAL SECURITY: Eligible employees of Ventura Superior Court participate in both Ventura County Employees' Retirement Association (VCERA) and Social Security. VCERA is a defined-benefit pension plan that provides a lifetime retirement benefit after being vested and meeting eligibility requirements. Benefits vest after 5 years of service. Employees hired to work less than 64 hours biweekly participate in another retirement plan in lieu of VCERA and Social Security. For information on VCERA membership/retirement, go to:
STATE DISABILITY INSURANCE (SDI): This program provides weekly benefits in the event of short term disability. Premiums are automatically deducted from your pay.
DEATH BENEFIT: Your department will provide a $1,000 death benefit payable to your designated beneficiary in the event of your death if you are enrolled in the Flexible Benefits Program.
OPTIONAL GROUP LIFE INSURANCE: If you are a regular Ventura Superior Court employee with a regular work schedule of at least 40 hours per pay period you may purchase term life insurance coverage for either $10,000 or one times your annual base salary, without evidence of insurability, if you enroll within your first 90 days of eligibility. You may also be eligible to purchase term life insurance at group rates for two or three times your annual salary, subject to evidence of insurability. Dependents life insurance is also available for employees who purchase optional life insurance coverage.
