Who We Are:
The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $885M and 2,162 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing, and contracting, ISD is the County's trusted partner and provider of choice.
The Opportunity:
We are pursuing a qualified candidate to fill a County Messenger Driver position in the Mail & Delivery services section. The position operates a County-owned vehicle to pick-up and deliver County mail.
Positions allocable to this class are characterized by duties involving the pick-up, sorting and delivery of heavy containers of mail, packages, and other items of value for County departments.
What You Will Do:
Makes scheduled trips on assigned routes to pick-up and deliver items such as United States and County mail, legal documents, court exhibits including welfare and probation case history files, supplies, payroll warrants, cash and negotiable instruments, personal property, x-ray and movie films, maps, plans, and books.
Loads and unloads vehicle in such a manner as to prevent loss, damage, or breakage of items transported, and to expedite handling at scheduled stops.
Reads maps to determine routes and directions.
Assumes responsibility for valuable items being transported under a security receipt system.
Suggests changes in routes or schedules, pick-up or delivery locations, parking arrangements, etc., to expedite service.
Sorts mail by routes for delivery throughout the County. Keeps records and prepares volume counts, accident reports, and daily mileage reports.
Ensures that assigned vehicle is safety checked and serviced daily in accordance with preventive maintenance requirements.

Six (6) months full-time experience driving a CARGO VAN*or larger vehicle to pick-up and deliver mail, valuable property, or documents using a device or log system (e.g., Personal Digital Assistant, tablet, multiple part paper receipt, or log) to track and account for all materials transported to and from various locations.
License:
A valid California Class C Driver License is needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
Physical Expectations:
IV - Arduous. Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.
Special Requirement Information
*Cargo van is defined as a two-axle vehicle used to carry cargo instead of passengers with cargo space ranging from 100 to 300 cubic feet. Gross Vehicle Weight ranges from 5,000 - 7,500 lbs.

This examination process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on application information, desirable qualification, and supplemental questionnaire information at the time of filing weighted 100%.

You must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be added onto the list of eligible candidates.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the assessment will be placed on the Eligible List in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Passing this examination and being placed on the Eligible List do not guarantee an offer of employment.
