JOB SUMMARY
Reporting directly to County Court at Law Judge, responsible for recording, transcribing, and maintaining all records of court proceedings. Serves in County Court at Law 4.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
  • Reviews, collects, transcribes, and processes legal paperwork and prepares documents for electronic use
  • Performs extensive data entry to record court proceeding utilizing stenograph machine
  • Develops and provides transcripts to requestors including filing exhibits related to court proceedings
  • Serves as department liaison for public information request and collaborates with internal and external agencies
  • Attends court and legal meetings to record evidence, dispositions, objections, rulings, jury selection and arguments
  • Maintains the upkeep of stenograph machine including coordinating maintenance and updating tasks
  • Performs data entry for various legal documents

  • Performs and implements various quality control processes to ensure data and documents are accurate

  • Ensures comprehensive filing systems are maintained and up to date
  • Assists County Court with various projects assigned by Judge
  • Provides direct customer service either in person or on the telephone regarding information requests
  • Attends all meetings and trainings, as required
  • Performs special duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Position involves prolonged sitting at a workstation, visual examination of documents, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, standing and occasional lifting/carrying

  • Position involves safely operating a motor vehicle

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
  • Work is primarily indoors in an air-conditioned environment
  • Regular travel between work sites as required

IRREGULAR HOURS
  • Work outside of the normal office hours (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) may be required
  • May be deemed essential personnel in the event of an emergency

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • One (1) year of experience transcribing legal proceedings

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required
  • Certified Shorthand Reporter by Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission

Required within thirty (30) days of employment
  • Valid driver's license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from an accredited court reporting school
  • Two (2) years of court experience as a Certified Shorthand Reporter
