Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, three times per week, at minimum.

The Role
Counsel - Compliance Assurance is charged with developing and overseeing the Compliance Monitoring/Proactive Compliance program within the Ethics & Compliance function of the GM Legal Staff.  The primary responsibility is to lead the compliance department’s use of data and analytics.  The Compliance Assurance counsel will harness data to better identify legal and compliance risks and proactively address compliance issues.  Compliance assurance counsel will help develop and lead risk assessments, program assessments, and continuous monitoring at the direction of the Ethics & Compliance function’s leadership. This position reports to the Lead Counsel, Compliance and Regional Compliance Officer, North America.

As a member of the GM Legal Staff, Counsel will strive to be a role model for the Company by delivering high performance legal services with high integrity. The GM Legal Staff’s objectives are to deliver timely, best-in-class business advisory and legal services in close collaboration with business partners to accomplish their objectives while simultaneously protecting GM’s high standards of legal, ethical, and financial integrity. Each member of the Legal Staff, including Counsel, is expected to adhere to these standards.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Develop and lead risk assessments, program assessments, and continuous monitoring.

  • Use data and analytics to monitor and test policies, controls, and transactions.

  • Develop dashboards and metrics to help ensure the effectiveness of GM’s compliance program.

  • Oversee and develop analytics tools to proactively detect potential instances of fraud, policy violations or legal violations.

  • Evaluate and potentially implement uses of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to prevent and detect compliance violations.

  • Assist in remediation efforts for identified violations.

  • Work cross functionally with audit, IT, HR, and other constituencies

  • Maintain technical competency and understand the business.

  • Supervise assigned staff and/or resources.

  • Promote teamwork and supporting the overall objectives of Legal department.

  • Evaluate systems of internal control and related procedures

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a corporate, consulting, audit, or outside counsel setting.

  • Strong experience working with data and analytical tools and methods.

  • Maintain effective communication with individuals at all levels of the organization.

  • Ensure confidentiality of sensitive information is maintained.

  • Prior experience with a company’s compliance team, helping to build and maintain an effective compliance program.

  • Work cross-functionally to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations as well as the Company’s internal policies.

  • Develop a strong understanding of GM operations worldwide to include cultural understanding.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in a corporate, consulting, audit, or outside counsel setting.

  • Experience using data and analytics for compliance purposes in a large, corporate environment.

  • Previous experience working in an in-house compliance role.

  • A law degree from an accredited college of university is not required but is strongly preferred.

  • Admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction in the United States and, if not admitted in Michigan, the ability to qualify for in-house counsel status in Michigan

  • Experience working on anti-fraud projects.

  • Experience with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and/or international anti-corruption laws

  • Ability to travel occasionally.
