Job Description
Our client, within the personal care/cosmetics industry in Cincinnati, is looking for a Scientist to join their growing team. This role would involve general bench work working on new projects and formulations. Someone who has polymer/silicone experience would be ideal. This is a high visibility role with lots of growth and learning opportunity.
- Shift: 1st shift M-F, flexible hours in the range of 7:00am – 5:00pm
- Pay: $25-32/hr
- 6 month contract-to-hire
Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with 2+ years of experience in personal care formulation and understanding of materials used in formulations.
Areas of Responsibility
Responsibilities listed below are based on entry-level/mid-level candidates and will be adjusted based on candidate qualifications and experience. Required skill remain the same.
QC testing of incoming materials for approval & release
Includes understanding and conducting detailed test parameters, recording results & observations, maintaining internal & external documentation, and sending cross-functional communications.
- Manage technical aspects of projects with emphasis on accuracy and detail. This includes, but not limited to:
- Internal and external QC/QA, Regulatory, and Specification documentation and updates.
- Understanding critical parameters of raw materials to ensure quality.
- Adjust or create new test procedures and protocols as necessary to collect data that best assures the parameters are appropriately designated.
- Ensure technical documentation is accurate, detailed, updated, stored, and maintained with great attention to detail.
- Raw material specification alignment with internal team, manufacturers, and customers.
- Assessment of primary and secondary material suppliers for all launchable products.
Experimental batching, formulation, evaluation, and monitoring
Thorough understanding of raw material characteristics, formulation design, test parameters, stability evaluations, troubleshooting, and developing batch processes and procedures.
- Develop novel formulations for skin, hair, sun, and color products. This will be in combination of independent development and direction and guidance from manager.
- Ensure all selected experiments and formulas are put on stability to monitor over time and at varying temperatures.
- Justify use of ingredients, use levels, and value-added purpose(s) in the formula(s).
- Prepare and conduct protocols for evaluating formulas – ability to maintain objective observations is a critical part of this responsibility.
- Prepare and present technical presentations for sales team and customers.
Required Skills/Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, or related field.
- Personal care formulation experience is highly preferred. Including knowledge of materials used in personal care formulations, and the function of those materials.
- Consideration given to candidates with 2+ years of experience in a lab environment with understanding of basic equipment and calibration methods (pH meter, viscometer, overhead mixer, and other).
Must demonstrate:
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and communication skills (written & verbal).
- Knowledge and proficiency in such programs as Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Ability to work in an extremely small team while proactively taking the opportunity for ownership of projects, proposing timelines, and managing expectations.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.
- A confidentiality agreement must be signed prior to starting the position.
