Position Summary: The Cosmetic Safety Assessor plays a pivotal role in evaluating the safety of cosmetic products for export. This role involves a comprehensive assessment of ingredients, chemical structures, exposure dosages, toxicology research, and potential interactions, leading to the determination of product safety. Additionally, the Safety Assessor will undertake the responsibility of signing and dating safety reports, ensuring the accuracy and credibility of the assessment. This role requires a deep understanding of Cosmetic Safety evaluation methodologies and regulatory compliance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Country Team, International Product Managers, Quality Control, Consultants, and Executive Management to ensure the completion of the Safety Assessment for each product.
  • Conduct thorough safety evaluations of cosmetic products, considering ingredient profiles, chemical structures, exposure dosages, stability tests, microbiology data, and available toxicology data.
  • Review and sign safety reports, certifying the safety assessment's accuracy and validity.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations set forth by the central competent authority throughout the product lifecycle, from raw material selection to sales.
  • Verify the adherence of added ingredients and their concentrations to regulatory standards.
  • Confirm product's permissible local exposure dosage for safe consumer use.
  • Ensure packaging materials preserve product quality, mitigate risks, and prevent misuse.
  • Ensure clear and comprehensive labels include usage directions, warnings, and accident response instructions.
  • Evaluate systemic exposure dosage through the consideration of factors such as usage frequency, exposure area, and absorption rates.
  • Assess potential risks for specific professional groups whose exposure conditions may differ from those of regular consumers.
  • Evaluate secondary exposure channels, such as inhalation and inadvertent ingestion, for risk assessment.
  • Utilize No Observed Adverse Effect Levels (NOAEL) and Margin of Safety (MoS) calculations when evaluating ingredient safety.
  • Employ Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) for ingredients lacking safety data, considering worst-case exposure.
  • Determine the necessity of additional testing if toxicological data is insufficient for safety confirmation.
  • Suggest necessary precautions and warnings for consumers during the evaluation process and collaborate with responsible business units to incorporate precautionary information on packaging as needed..
  • Maintain Cosmetic Safety training certification..
  • Comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • None, but may direct the work of others.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degrees degree in Pharmacy, Toxicology, or other biological sciences
  • Alternatively, candidates may have graduated from a department of chemistry or chemical engineering before June 30, 2019, and possess a minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience in Cosmetic Safety evaluation.
  • Coursework completion in Cosmetic Safety Evaluation
  • Demonstrated understanding of Cosmetic Safety regulations and guidelines
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using relevant safety assessment methodologies
  • Proficiency in both verbal and written English language. Mandarin (Traditional) Chinese proficiency is a plus.

Computer/Communication Skills:
  • Proficient use of MS Office programs: Word, Excel, and Outlook, required
  • High energy level, comfortable performing multifaceted strategic projects in conjunction with day-to-day tactical activities
  • Ability to get along and work with diverse personalities; tactful, mature, flexible
  • Prioritizes and models good communication skills; follows up, timely responses, proactive and positive in approach
  • Above moderate to high levels in reading comprehension, writing, and speaking in English; active listening; attention to detail; critical thinking; mathematics, creative problem solving; complex problem solving; and judgment.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple assessments.
  • Proactive approach to identifying potential safety concerns.

Travel:
  • Remote work with business approval
  • Annual conference participation and related travel

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • Normal office environment with little exposure to dust and weather conditions prevalent at the time (i.e., cold hot/humid)
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, cameras, photocopiers, and filing cabinets
  • Regularly required to talk, walk, stand, bend, twist, reach with hands and arms, stoop kneel and crouch
  • Raise and lower an object from one level to the another, less than twenty (20) pounds.
  • Visual acuity must be a minimum or 20/40 (corrected) and normal hand/eye coordination
  • Normal or corrected hearing
  • Must be able to perform in an office environment where ninety (90) percent of work is performed sitting.
  • Occasional long or irregular hours of work
