The Corrosion & Materials Engineer provides engineering support in the areas of metallurgy, corrosion, coatings, and welding to continuously improve safe, reliable operation of refinery equipment. Additionally, the Corrosion Engineer provides corrosion control services with a primary focus on asset integrity while also maintaining compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements for refinery assets.
Responsibilities May Include:
  • Providing effective, practical, and economical solutions to materials, metallurgical, corrosion, coating, and welding problems that arise during refinery maintenance, operations, and projects
  • Assuring compliance with codes, refinery standards, and industry practices required in the construction and/or repair of pressure vessels, piping and other pressure containing equipment
  • Participating in progressing work on company mechanical integrity standards, industry practices and jurisdictional requirements
  • Performing process variable tracking. Leading the development and monitoring of MI related ROL's (Reliable Operating Limits - aka Integrity Operating Windows - IOW's). Review/recommend changes in unit operations with Process personnel to maintain safety, extend life, or reduce costs
  • Collaborating with Energy Research and Innovation organization to conduct failure investigations and corrosion studies on systems and equipment
  • Writing and reviewing Inspection Work Requests (IWR) and welding procedure specifications (WPS)
  • Keeping abreast of new developments in areas of process corrosion/fouling control systems corrosion monitoring, and materials of construction and utilizing where available and appropriate
  • Developing system and circuits, Corrosion Control Documents and conducting Damage mechanism reviews consistent with industry guidance
  • Exhibiting leadership through teams and networks involving company and plant maintenance, inspection, reliability, operations, and process personnel to develop programs that:
    • Identify corrosion/fouling and other damage mechanisms and recommend control and monitoring methods as a part of the Refinery Risk Based Inspection Program
    • Recommend strategies and guidelines for material upgrades or changes
    • Evaluate processing operating parameters that impact corrosion
    • Liaison with process chemical vendor (corrosion/fouling control) personnel
    • Supervise, and/or perform field tests with process corrosion/fouling control chemicals and equipment
    • Develop and maintain corrosion control strategy and supporting documentation including corrosion and fouling equipment history

Required Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor's degree higher in Metallurgical, Materials Science, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Valid driver's license
  • 3 or more years of experience working at a facility managing corrosion and/or materials
  • Working knowledge in the fundamentals of corrosion, basic form of corrosion, and methods of corrosion control
  • Basic understanding of chemical process equipment and processes and the ability to apply failure investigation methodology and problem-solving principles
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write technical reports and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and general plant personnel
  • Ability to work with diverse groups including people at all positions and levels of experience from inspectors and operators through refinery management

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5 or more years of experience working in a refining, petrochemical, or industrial environment
  • Willing to work in a refinery plant environment.
  • NACE, ASNT, and API training and/or certifications
  • Working knowledge of SAP and PCMS
  • Working knowledge of Sections I, V, VIII and IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and API Inspection Codes (510, 570, 571, 653)
  • Working knowledge of weld procedure specification (WPS) reviews
  • Working knowledge of general inspection techniques and processes
  • Working knowledge of pertinent Process Safety Management (PSM) and Mechanical Integrity (MI) procedures and expectations
  • Working knowledge of Systems, Circuits, and Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs)
  • Working knowledge of Risk Based Inspection API 580
  • Working knowledge of Cathodic Protection (CP) systems

The Ponca City Refineryis located in Ponca City, Oklahoma, approximately 95 miles northwest of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, medium and heavy crude oil delivered via pipeline from Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, the U.S. Rockies and Canada. Infrastructure improvements have enabled the delivery of locally produced crude oil by pipeline and truck. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and anode-grade petroleum coke. Refined products are primarily distributed to customers by company-owned and common carrier pipelines to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
