Job description

Transport inmates to and from Court, King County Jail, and other regional facilities. Incumbents ensure fair and reasonable care and custody of inmates, and coordinate the EHD (electronic home detention) Program, as well as the recording, safeguarding and transporting of evidence and property. Supervises and coordinates the operations of the Property Room.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Work is performed independently within established procedures and policies. Receives general work directions from the Jail Manager. Exercises considerable judgment and decision-making in handling emergency and sensitive matters. Assumes responsibilities for assigned operations in the absence of the Jail Manager. Coordinates prisoner transports and warrants and meets with outside agencies.

  • Transport inmates for court appearances, psychological and medical evaluation and treatment and other activities that require leaving the jail.
  • Ability to operate police transport vehicle.
  • Transport or assist other department personnel in the transportation of prisoners to locations outside the jail facility; to and from court armed with firearm.
  • Compiles cost and collects for inmates on EHD.
  • Performs the initial recording and storage, record keeping security, retrieval, and disposition, including destruction, release or conversion of all evidentiary materials submitted by uniformed and detective personnel for potential litigation or criminal investigation.
  • Prepares property and handles auction when appropriate.
  • Supervise prisoners' visitations.
  • Keeps records, prepares reports, and performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Performs duties of Police Corrections Officer when necessary.
  • Determines eligibility of defendant for personal recognizance.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience as a Security Officer or Corrections Officer preferred.
  • A combination of experience and training that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skills to perform the job will be considered.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid WA State Driver's License with driving record acceptable to the City's driving standards.
  • Carries a court issued firearm as outlined in the Issaquah Police Department Policy Manual and qualifies quarterly under the guidance of the Issaquah Police Department.
  • Portable Breathalyzer Test (PBT) certification.
  • Taser certification. Ability to pass Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background investigation which includes polygraph and psychology exams.
  • Ability to pass medical physical.
  • Successful completion of the Criminal Justice Training Corrections Academy.
  • First Aid certification

Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of criminal behavior and causes underlying criminality and the social, psychological and physical needs of criminals/inmates.
  • Knowledge of computers and ability to utilize effective computerized record-keeping systems.
  • Security policies and procedures.
  • Methods, materials, and tools used in security office work.

Skill in:
  • Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Problem solving.
  • Decision making and conflict resolution.
  • Diffusing irate or combative individuals.
  • Record keeping techniques.

Ability to:
  • Accept and carry out explicit orders and otherwise follows critical sequences of procedures involving a strict personal organizational code of conduct and ethics.
  • Maintain composure and self-control under adverse conditions, e.g., public harassment, ridicule, critical injuries, and death.
  • Remember details, such as names, faces, incidents, identification of objects.
  • Cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of all citizens.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Handle persons who become violent or may resist apprehension.
  • Apply business English, grammatical composition, spelling, and punctuation to typing reports and correspondence.
  • Express self clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Perform duties and maintain personal conduct, attitude and appearance in conformance with strict policies, procedures, discipline, and the chain of command management system.
