The Isanti County Jail is accepting applications for qualified candidates to fill both full-time and part-time Corrections Officers positions (Male Only).
An individual must meet the minimum qualifications as stated below to qualify for the male Corrections Officer positions:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • And any combination of general work experience or post high school education that equals two years.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain by date of hire, a valid State driver's license.
  • Must be certified, or ability to obtain certification, in CPR and basic life saving techniques and First Aid.
  • Pass a criminal history background investigation.

Full-time employment - 40 hours per week - benefit eligible.
Part-time employment - up to 29 hours per week - non-benefit eligible.
2023 full salary range: $24.73 - $31.95 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
2024 full salary range: $25.35 - $32.75 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under general supervision of the Jail Administrator, Assistant Jail Administrator, and Jail Sergeants. Performs skilled law enforcement work of routine difficulty in the administration and proper functioning of the County jail, including processing, supervising and general care of inmates. Performs related work as required. The work involves an element of personal danger. Work assignments are specific and special instructions are received from a supervisor who reviews work methods and results through reports, personal inspection and discussion. The employee must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. Consequence of error could result in inmates escaping and possible physical harm to person or public.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The following are illustrative and are not intended to be all inclusive or restrictive.
  • Maintains security, order and well-being of inmates in the jail facility. This encompasses both Direct Supervision and Indirect Supervision.
  • Books all incoming inmates, interviews to obtain medical history, criminal history, completes arrest forms, jail classification, searches inmate, secures personal property of inmate, takes photographs and fingerprints, issues jail clothing and bedding.
  • Maintains and is responsible to keep accurate jail computer logs of all events occurring in the jail facility, completes incident reports.
  • Takes custody of inmates. Receives escorts, and supervises all visitors, volunteers, family services staff, probation officers, and attorneys at the jail facility.
  • Supervises the daily activities of inmates, including feeding and general care, discipline, medical needs, and cleaning of cell blocks and jail facility by inmates.
  • Monitors the movement of inmates, visitors, and staff within the jail facility including 2 elevators, security garage, and courtroom holding cell.
  • Monitors video cameras inside and outside jail facility.
  • Responds to intercom call requests for electronic door openings, elevator movement, emergency duress alarms and security breach alarms, using computer touch-screen technology.
  • Responsible for proper completion of documentation prior to release of all inmates.
  • Responsible for testing of intoxicated individuals using the DMT-G alcohol testing machine.
  • Responsible for ensuring pre-release orders from the court are followed (turn-in of weapons, electronic monitoring, base-line urinalysis, etc.)
  • Responsible for performing bailiff duties at traffic court, and civil and criminal trials.
  • Responsible for transporting inmates to and from court and to other facilities, also transports mentally impaired individuals to and from various locations.
  • Books and fingerprints juveniles sent from court or probation office in accordance with state law.
  • Performs and documents Telephonic Probable Cause Hearings with county attorney staff and on-call judges.
  • Performs fingerprinting when requested by public for employment, adoptions, etc.
  • Responsible for placement of juveniles to secure or non-secure facilities, and placement and transport of intoxicated individuals to detox facilities.
  • Responsible for collecting, administering and evaluating and documenting alcohol and drug testing (breath and urine) on inmates (Huber and/or Sentence to Serve) resulting from court orders and probation requests.
  • Performs health screening of inmates. In the case of health issues (diabetic, detox/intoxication, suicidal inclinations, seizure, etc.) the officer is responsible for performing and documents vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and temperature).The officer is responsible for calling jail physician to determine course of treatment, medications and accurately reflecting jail physician's orders on associated medical records.
  • Verifies all medications (prescription and over-the-counter) brought into the jail facility. Initiates phone consultation with the jail physician in the absence of the jail nurse. Responsible for accurate accounting and dispending of controlled drugs to inmates as directed by the jail physician.
  • Prepares, delivers, and documents inmates' medication, monitors and assists inmates in the taking of medication, assists in changing dressing, etc. Handles the intake of inmates who have contagious or communicable diseases.
  • Responsible for requesting home monitoring equipment from probation department. Performs PBT testing as directed by the court and county probation department.
  • Compiles data, prepares reports and keeps inmate records.
  • Maintains accurate and current records of disposition of all inmates in custody of the County.
  • Accepts fees or payments for bonding purposes, issues receipts and court appearance dates, keeps records of transactions on inmate's accounts.
  • Trains in applicable law enforcement principles, procedures in laws and ordinances as they relate to the duties of the position; receives training in self-defense tactics.
  • Monitors prisoner communications in and out of the facility.
  • May provide security for county owned facilities.
  • Reviews new in-custody files each day in the jail and contacts appropriate prosecuting Attorney and Court Administration to schedule needed hearing.
  • Attends and provides courtroom security prior to and during court hearings.
  • Maintains order in and outside the courtroom and sees to the safety of visitors and participants.
  • Responsible for escorting inmates and from the jail to the courthouse.
  • Responsible for the direct supervision of inmates during court hearings and while in the court holding area.
  • Receives, escorts and supervises all Family Services Staff, Probation Offices and Attorneys while meeting with inmates in court holding area.
  • Responsible for taking persons into custody when direct to do so by the court.
  • Assists in communication between the Court Administrator and Attorneys about the status of cases to be heard.
  • Responsible for facilitating inmates in signing court documents and communicating court orders to the jail.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Any combination of training and experience providing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Requires regular and timely work attendance.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn current law enforcement principles, state laws, court procedures, practices, techniques and equipment.
  • Ability to react effectively and deal tactfully with persons in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Possess and maintain the physical ability sufficient to:
    1.) Physically restrain an inmate; 2.) Defend self and others in physical encounters; 3.) Withstand the stress of performing lifesaving techniques.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English language.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to read materials presenting complicated information such as legal documents, policy manuals, and state statutes.
  • Knowledge in use of computers, video camera monitoring equipment, programming of information, updating computer data.
  • Knowledge of the Department's organization, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interact with inmates in the housing unit and actively supervise them to identify problems in their early stages
  • Ability to communicate positively and use management techniques to prevent negative behavior and encourage positive behavior.
  • Must be able to handle high levels of stress while making prompt and effective decisions
  • Ability to deal with inmates with tact and impartiality; and exhibit mature judgment, imagination, initiative and problem solving capability in dealing with inmates.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, law enforcement and other agency personnel and the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • And any combination of general work experience or post high school education that equals two years.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain by date of hire, a valid State driver's license.
  • Must be certified, or ability to obtain certification, in CPR and basic life saving techniques and First Aid.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two year community college degree or vocational degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, police science or related field is preferred.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Transport squad or other vehicles used for inmate transport purposes. Radio, handcuffs, pager, first aid equipment, shackles, chemical agents, chair restraint, radio, flashlights, and Tasers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or control reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Periodic high levels of exertion in the form of unarmed self-defense and lifting/moving more than 100 pounds. Specific vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust to focus required. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
The work is typically performed indoors in the Correctional Facility. Potentially volatile environment with high accountability. The employee may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. At times work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
