Job description

This position is located at the Correction Enterprises Metal Plant at Anson Correctional Institution. The primary purpose of this position is to directly supervise up to 45 - 55 minimum custody inmates engaged in the manufacture of fabricated metal items (primarily stainless-steel kitchen items, and black iron lockers, bunks, and shelving) from start to completion. This position functions as the fabrication supervisor which trains and supervises all aspects of the fabricating operation. Position is responsible for demonstrating the proper techniques and training inmates on the safe and proper operation of all fabrication equipment including but not limited to shears, press brakes, iron workers, saws, and plasmas to ensure a quality finished product. This employee will complete all necessary safety training, and train the inmates in safety, tool control, and all other tasks required ensuring inmate/employee safety within a minimum custody prison environment. Duties include training in the operation of metal fabrication equipment. Performs visual inspection of the finished product for completeness, accuracy and neatness to ensure quality control. Items produced at this plant include but are not limited to worktables, baker's tables, sinks, dish tables, storage and transport cabinets, black iron lockers, bunks, shelving, and other related items. The fabricating portion of the manufacturing process requires some craftsmanship; therefore, the supervision and training of inmates is crucial to assure high quality of finished items, appearance, and to minimize waste. This position is responsible for completion of safety training and orientation necessary to ensure inmates are adequately trained to perform assigned tasks safely and according to OSHA, NCDAC, and Enterprises safety programs. This involves instruction, demonstration, and training in the use of related equipment and tools used to accomplish assigned jobs. The safety orientation also includes tool inventory control, as this plant operates within a minimum custody correctional institution. Accounting of all tools is crucial to maintaining a safe work environment and assuring that potentially dangerous items do not leave the plant and get into the institution.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Qualified applicants must possess, and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:
  • Must have 2 years of experience in the fabrication/welding of metal.
  • Must have experience in the use of metal fabrication tools to include sheer, press brake, saws, iron worker, and/or plasma cutter.
  • Must have at least one year of experience in supervising unskilled workers.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina Drivers License.
Management Preference:
At least five years of experience in metal fabrication.
Experience in the application powder coatings.

Necessary Special Qualifications:Must be eligible for certification by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Click HERE for specific certification requirements. Must be at least 20 years of age and a citizen of the United States. Must possess a valid driver's license. Pass Psychological testing as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Pass Physical Examination as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Pass Drug Screening as required by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Attend and successfully complete (6) weeks of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT) at a Training Facility. Employees shall be scheduled for BCOT during their 2nd month of employment.
