Job Title: Corporate Safety & Environmental Manager Division: Precision Pulley & Idler (PPI)
FLSA: Exempt Grade: N/A
Job Status: Full-Time Travel Required: Up to 40%
Revision Date: April 2024 Reports To: VP of Human Resources
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Plan, direct, implement, and evaluate company safety and assist with environmental programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment as well as compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations personally or through other managers and/or supervisors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
More specifically, the employee owner will:
  • Plan, direct, and implement safety and environmental policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations.
  • Ensure timely submittal of required federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulatory reports.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local OSHA regulations, safety codes, and environmental quality regulations.
  • Responsible for coaching and leading the safety coordinators at various locations
  • Plan, direct, and implement programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials.
  • Prepare studies and analysis of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
  • Inspect organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determine corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follow up to ensure measures have been implemented.
  • Plan, direct, and implement Hearing Conservation Program - schedule onsite hearing test.
  • Participate in safety committees, team meeting, or meetings as appropriate for the business unit.
  • Develop an understanding of applicable regulations and relationships with local agencies. Help implement and maintain an effective filing system that helps demonstrate compliance with all legal and other requirements.
  • Provide information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperate in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Oversee and, if needed compile, that accident reports are accurate and that they are submitted to the appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Manage administration of workers' compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier to reduce employee lost time.
  • Respond to emergency situations that could occur inside or outside of standard working hours.
  • Partner with Senior and Plant Leadership teams to develop safety and environmental strategies that are integrated with site and company business goals.
  • Plan and oversee Safety New Hire Orientation Training.
  • Travel domestically when required.
  • Continually participate in additional training in Safety and Environmental Fields.
  • Perform extra assignments in other areas and related task assignments in the work area as requested.
  • Engage in regular, consistent attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE - COMPUTER SKILLS
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or
  • 5 plus years related experience and/or training; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

TRAINING - CERTIFICATIONS - LICENSES
  • 10 and 30 hr OSHA Certified
  • RCRA Environmental Certified
  • ASP - Advance Safety Professional or CSP - Certified Safety Professional
  • Valid class C driver's license, First Aid/CPR certified, QEP (qualified environmental professional), and other certificates of training deemed necessary as regulator agencies dictate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to frequently stoop/bend. Must be able to regularly use hands and arms. Must be able to regularly stand and walk. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision. Specific hearing abilities required by this job include being able to respond quickly to instructions in a fast-paced work environment and demonstrate good communication skills.
ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Occasionally exposed to work in high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock.
  • Frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), and vibration.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.
  • Steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, and hearing protection are required in production areas and when posted.
