GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to provide proper care, custody and control of inmates in the detention facility and to reasonably ensure the safety and security of inmates, visitors and staff. The Corporal supervises subordinate officers in the absence of the Sergeant, and otherwise assists in supervision and performs duties of a Correctional Officer as assigned and required.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

1. Plan, organize and supervise an assigned unit or specialized function of the Detention Center in the absence of the Sergeant.
2. Assist Sergeant in supervision of unit or specialized function, including scheduling, instructing, assigning and reviewing work.
3. Patrol facility to ensure safety and security of inmates and staff.
4. Receives new detainees into the facility.
5. Complete booking, fingerprinting, photographs, and screening of new detainees; housing new inmates according to specific classifications.
6. Monitor bond hearings for inmates along with inmate movement throughout the facility.
7. Administer medications to inmates
8. Provide meals to inmates.
9. Provide recreation to inmates.
10. Provide visitation to inmates.
11. Conduct head counts of inmates.
12. Routine searches of inmates, inmate living quarters, and the facility.
13. Transport inmates to court and other facilities.
14. Process and deliver mail to inmates.
15. Monitor cameras and security equipment.
16. Perform training of employees and related duties.
17. Perform special duties or complete special projects as required.

Additional duties include:

• Perform mass evacuations of facility in emergency situations (fire, etc.). Search inmates and facility for contraband. Provide disciplinary actions to inmates when needed. Provide care, custody, and control of mentally ill inmates. Complete and maintain required paperwork. Perform custodial and general maintenance of the facility. Communicate with law enforcement, judges, attorneys, the public etc. Perform general clerical work.
• Duties may also include assisting in the supervision of food service operations and the performance / supervision of facility maintenance and repairs. Supervise and train inmate workers assigned to food service, laundry, facility maintenance and clean-up. Ensure that food preparation, food storage, cleaning of equipment/ utensils meet or exceed Health Department guidelines. Assist in preparing menus.

Requirements:

• Basic computer skills required. Communication skills required. Reasoning skills required. Basic mathematical skills required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• The educational requirement for this position is: Completion of high school/GED.
• Education may be substituted for experience.
• Related-experience required: 1 year of experience as a Correctional Officer II
• Experience may be substituted for education.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Certifications, licenses, professional designations, or other qualifications required for this position include:

• Must possess certification as a Class 2-LCO (Local Correctional Officer).
• Must meet all other requirements for a Correctional Officer I.
• Requires at least two years of experience as a Correctional Officer II.
