Job Description
This class is responsible for preparing food and maintaining a sanitary environment.Some positions within this classification may be considered as safety sensitive and will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Gwinnett County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace. This position is a grade A122.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
- Cooks and prepares food according to established or special menus.
- Assists in overseeing the work of inmates and volunteers or other assigned personnel.
- Serves food to customers.
- Maintains a safe and sanitary environment.
- Maintains records of inventories, assists in ordering supplies and assists in determining the cost of meals.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Training and Experience (positions in this class require):
- High School Diploma, or G.E.D.;
- or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licensing Requirements (positions in this class require):

- Valid Driver's License from state of residency.

Physical Requirements:
- Positions in this class require: reaching, standing, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
- Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Vision requirement that an individual must be able to determine color variations to be able to detect spoiled foods.
- Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, and extreme temperatures.

Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office is approximately 800,000 square feet, making it one of the largest jails in the country. Just under 1 million square feet, the facility is large enough to fit 20 full-size football fields. In any given year, 35,000 to 37,000 individuals are incarcerated at the Gwinnett County Jail. The Gwinnett County Jail is classified as a Direct Supervision Pretrial Detention Center and has a maximum capacity to house 2,600 inmates. The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office consists of 3 buildings, 41 housing units, and 14 security stations.
