This Controller will partner with the business to ensure that our results are analyzed, and opportunities and risks are identified to support our goal to continually improve results. This is a remote role for a finance professional with strong ambition and a desire to contribute to the team through learning and collaboration.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, REQUIREMENTS AND PREREQUISITES
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- Active CPA, preferred.
- Extensive hands-on experience in accounting with a minimum of 5 years of experience in relevant roles.
- Proven experience in a financial leadership role, ideally within a nonprofit environment.
- Minimum of 5 years of audit or similar professional experience in reputable firm.
- Strong accounting knowledge of GAAP (incl. process review, testing & documentation).
- Candidate must have experience in full cycle accounting, especially in month end close, financial statement preparation.
- Exposure to nonprofit industry, strong desire to learn the business.
- Proficiency with leading ERP systems, Sage 100 is a plus.
- Travel is not a major component of this position, although you may occasionally be asked to travel domestically for team meetings.
- Valid Virginia Driver's License.
- Satisfactory Driving Record (-5 points or better).
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions: May be required to perform any of the following duties:
- FINANCIAL ACTIVITES
- Manages all accounting activities to ensure consistency of the financial statements, management reports, systems, and controls.
- Oversees all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Oversees the month-end reconciliations.
- Leads the month, quarter, and year-end financial close and reporting process for the different programs, including reviews of all aspects of the accounting and controlling.
- Ensures the accuracy of monthly financial statements, quarterly and year-end reporting packages for all programs.
- Develops and maintains systems, procedures, and policies to ensure the efficient and effective management of agency's finances.
- Improves and standardizes reporting activities, in alignment with group directions and agency initiatives.
- Provides business enhancing solutions and reporting that facilitates optimal decision making to maximize results.
- Participates in the business planning and forecasting process, helping to ensure that financial budgets are properly reported and in line with program goals.
- Coordinates accounting software updates and GL structure changes.
- Coordinates review of annual service agreements and ensures needed changes are implemented so service revenue will be received in a timely manner and maximizes revenue collections.
- Ensures completion of grant/contract audits.
- Assists Programs Directors and Managers Medicaid audit responses to ensure pay back is minimized.
- Oversees preparation of 1099s annually.
- Performs other duties as required and assigned by the CFO or CEO.
- STRATEGY
- Collaborates with executive management to provide strategic insights and recommendations to facilitate business decisions.
- Recommends and implement initiatives that will improve the agency's financial performance and financial controls.
- Supports the CFO to research and accurately advise on technical accounting issues related to strategic transactions, including major capex, financial instruments, and other complex areas.
- REGULATIONS/RISK
- Ensures accurate and timely reporting, adhering to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures to ensure the protection of agency assets and the accuracy of financial data.
- Liaises with external auditors, as required, to monitor the overall audit process, address audit requests in a timely, efficient, and consistent manner, and ensure that any findings are adequately addressed to mitigate risk.

- Leads and develops a team, fostering a culture of excellence, growth, and collaboration.

- Partners in developing a strong Controlling organization, building team resources that are trained and equipped with the appropriate skills and competencies to achieve high performance in our financial reporting, control, and business partnering roles.
- Assists with recruitment, trains and assists accounting staff in goal setting; the accomplishment of department and individual goals; work methods and processes in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Keeps staff informed regarding agency policies, organizational information, and changes in local, state and federal regulations.
