Goodwill SWMI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Our nearly 300 dedicated team members help achieve our mission of improving the community by providing employment, education, training and support services tailored to individual needs across a six county territory. Goodwill SWMI manages ten retail stores (with attached, attended donation centers and one stand-alone donation center), Contract Manufacturing Operations as well as Custodial & Janitorial business units. These business operations provide stability to our organization that is not always enjoyed by nonprofit organizations solely funded by outside sources.

General Responsibilities
The Continuous Improvement Manager assesses, monitors and enhances business performance for Goodwill Industries of Southwestern Michigan. This role analyzes current practices and develops business process improvements as well as implements changes in workflow, structure and teams to ensure continuous company performance. Responsibilities include participating with management to prioritize project initiation, develop project objectives, facilitate teams, lead the implementation of project results and track project results. The person in this position must exemplify the agency’s core values of Success, Collaboration, People and Positivity.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities & Functions
  • Provide direction and support to transactional departments.
  • Plan, preform and implement process improvement initiatives in support of agency leaders leveraging Continuous Improvement tools and methods.
  • Partner with business leaders, technical resources and subject matter experts to identify, prioritize and implement improvement initiatives.
  • Manage and ensure the Goodwill Industries Quality Management System conforms to customer, internal and external (ISO 9001:2015)), regulatory requirements.
  • Support agency strategic goals such as improving speed of service, quality of service delivery, process efficiency and effectiveness and process innovation and transportation.
  • Conduct various Continuous Improvement training sessions such as, but not limited to: problem solving, Continuous Improvement tools, visual management, 5s, and kaizen facilitation.
  • Oversee training and development plant and retail staff & align training with the organizations goals. Oversee the full implementation and annual training needs through Goodwill Academy LMS System.
  • Educate, coach, and mentor employees at all levels in the organization to establish an engaged Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence culture.
  • Successfully manage project timelines, resources, deliverables, and present regularly to stakeholders.
  • Serve as a both tactical and strategic partner with the agency leadership team and process owners to implement/sustain the Goodwill SWMI Management Operating Structure and ensure standard manufacturing processes are in place.
  • Monitor and support key metrics and KPIs for overall supply chain performance and process effectiveness within the site. Supports/coaches KPI owners in completion of gap analyses, identification and implementation of corrective actions, and assessment to ensure that gap is closed.
  • Lead a portfolio of projects and team(s) in the review and retail analysis of moderate to large supply chain processes to ensure efficient and effective operations.
  • Identify supply chain process requirements, improvement opportunities and best practices for Goodwill SWMI agency.
  • Participate with management to leverage site data to prioritize projects, define project requirements, scope, resources, team members, tasks, and project owners.
  • Act as the primary owner for identifying the need for change/improvement and is point person for managing business process change for the site on an ongoing basis.
  • Lead or perform analyses that involves the application of advanced Continuous Improvement principles and practices, such as reviewing the flow of product or information, analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, preparing findings, and developing recommendations and conclusions.
  • Partner with site management and process owners to implement new processes or guidelines, determine improvements, identify and track savings, develop reports, and receive approval when required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong situational leadership skills to influence all levels of the organization within the plant location.
  • Capable of building strong relationships with Operations leaders in order to effect change.
  • High level of credibility and influence among hourly associates in site.
  • Personal traits-progressive, adaptable, flexible, high-energy, mature, strong interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical, trouble-shoot and problem-solve skills to assess needs, understand issues, and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Able to become the Continuous Improvement go-to person for the site and build a culture of Continuous Improvement.
  • Able to become the subject matter expert for supply chain processes for the site and continuously create the future state.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills to represent site Continuous Improvement activities.
  • Strong PC skills; Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and other applicable applications such as Microsoft Project.

Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required- Operations, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering
  • Minimum of 3-5 years plant based manufacturing experience, previous project management experience and Continuous Improvement skills training.
  • Six Sigma Certification with a green or black belt is a plus.
