Job Description:
Provide specialty Contact Lens Fitting including designing lenses to fit diseased, traumatized, and/or complex conditions as well as routine fittings for multiple doctor eye care setting. Ensure patient satisfaction providing superior service and contributing to total patient care in conjunction with licensed eye doctor.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Works with doctors, ophthalmic technicians, and other department staff to fit patients with a current prescription with Contact Lenses of all types including aphakic, pediatric, keratoconus, post refractive surgery, scleral lenses and other complex corneal conditions and degenerations in addition to over refraction, keratometry, patient education, lens selection, trial fit and lens order.
2. Assists the Ophthalmologist or Optometrist in performing routine eye examination procedures by performing preliminary diagnostic testing procedures of the patient's eyes.
3. Perform Contact Lens checks including visual acuity, over refraction, and slit lamp evaluation of Contact Lenses and corneal health.
4. Maintain superior knowledge of Contact Lens products, procedures, and techniques through outside resources such as classes, journals, texts, and vendor representatives. Act as resource for Contact Lens information for physicians, staff, patients and others.
5. Teach patients techniques of Contact Lens insertion and removal, cleaning, care and maintenance.
6. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.
Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
Post High School education in a specialized field: Graduate of accredited two year Ophthalmic Technician Program or Completion of the independent study course for Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
DESIRED
High School Diploma or equivalency + Some post-secondary course work in health or business related field.
Graduate of eye care related program.
Work Experience:
REQUIRED
3-4 years experience fitting rigid and soft Contact Lenses including over refraction, keratometry, lens selection, rigid lens design and slit lamp bio microscopy.
License and Certifications:
REQUIRED
National Contact Lens Certification (NCLE) within 18 months of hire
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certified by JCAHPO within 18 months of hire
Age Specific Population Served:

Adolescent (13 - 17 years)
Adult (18 - 64 years)
Geriatric (65 years & older)
OSHA Category:

- Working at the Gundersen Eye Clinic La Crosse
- 0.9 FTE; 40 hours one week, 32 hour the next
- Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
What you will do:
- You will run and support your own schedule to assist patients surrounding Contact Lenses. You will work with patients to determine the best Contact Lenses for them and contribute to total patient care in conjunction with the Optometrist.
