The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, Division of Quality Assurance and Regulations is recruiting to fill a Consumer Protection Inspector (Meat Inspection) position.


BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Ever wonder why the burgers and chicken nuggets you purchase are safe to eat? Would you like to help Mainers by making sure their food is safe to eat? Would you like to ensure that the animals that are used for food are treated humanely before slaughter? The Maine Meat and Poultry Inspection (MMPI) program performs inspections of slaughter and processing facilities to ensure that the products that leave MMPI inspected facilities are safe for consumers and that the animals that arrive at these slaughter facilities are treated humanely. As a MMPI inspector, you must be able to gather information, interpret regulations, assess findings to determine when corrections need to be made, and write non-compliance records in an accurate, descriptive, and precise manner. Food safety training and/or knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP), butchery and microbiology are preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Four (4) years of education, training, and/or experience in the field of microbiology, agricultural science, food science, applied mechanics, regulatory/law enforcement, or weights & measures.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: Must be willing to attend out-of-state training or travel overnight within the state if required. Must be willing to work paid overtime and/or drive in inclement weather if required. The successful applicant must have a valid driver’s license as MMPI inspectors use state vehicles to perform inspections. Competency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) products is required.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:(These must be met by all employees after hire but prior to attaining permanent status in this class): Must complete USDA-FSIS Food Inspector and USDA-FSIS Inspection Methods trainings with a passing grade.
