DESCRIPTION OF WORK
DEFINITION: This position performs skilled work in construction, repair, and maintenance of parks facilities and grounds.
REPORTS TO: The Construction Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Maintains and repairs assigned tools and equipment.
  • Constructs park structures and recreational equipment, including gazebos, fishing piers, look-out piers, and decks.
  • Assists in constructing park equipment, swing sets, basketball goals, and tennis courts.
  • Repairs water fountains and restrooms; repairs roofs; paints structures; resurfaces basketball courts and tennis courts; removes graffiti from buildings and sidewalks.
  • Maintains and cleans swimming pools and related equipment; adds chemicals to ensure water quality.
  • Operates tools and equipment, including skill saw, table saw, miter saw, hammer drill, level, and wrenches; operates backhoes and other light equipment.
  • Gathers equipment and supplies to ensure availability at the job site.
  • Follows safety guidelines.
  • Transports equipment to work sites.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship / internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of parks maintenance policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety standards.
  • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
  • Skill in the repair and maintenance of hand tools.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Construction Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related construction and maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of parks buildings, grounds, and facilities. Success in this position contributes to safe and well-maintained parts facilities.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, stooping, standing, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
