Construction Site Supervisor
Employment Status: Full-time, non-exempt
Reports to: Project Manager
The Construction Site Supervisor is a vital member of Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity’s construction team. The construction supervisor is responsible for the daily construction activity on Iowa Heartland’s build sites, providing leadership to volunteer build teams and Iowa Heartland Habitat homebuyers working on sweat equity hours. The Construction Site Supervisor must enjoy teaching people how to safely and efficiently build houses, ensuring they experience an organized and enjoyable day. The Construction Site Supervisor works directly with volunteers, homebuyers and other staff members to move Habitat’s building mission forward.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & CORE RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
· Supervises overall construction activity and provides leadership to construction activity on the build sites each workday in accordance with Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity plans, specifications and quality requirements.
· Welcomes volunteers to the work site and instructs them in the tasks they will be performing for the day (suitable to the skill level of the volunteers).
· Evaluates and implements good safety practices.
· Treats partner family members with respect and dignity, striving to make their construction (sweat equity) involvement meaningful.
· Understands elements that contribute to successful volunteers and helps ensure that volunteers have a consistently good experience, thus motivating them to return.
· Anticipates problems and issues typical of the work of Habitat for Humanity and takes responsibility for solving them on the work site if necessary to help ensure schedules are met and work plans are enabled.
· Identifies volunteer jobs/needs not currently filled and communicates needs to the Project Manager.
· Suggests potential advantageous building practices and material cost-saving opportunities to Project Manager.
· Plans several days in advance for the tools and materials needed to complete upcoming tasks in order to keep project advancing toward completion.
· Keeps track of tools, makes sure tools are not damaged and requests replacements as needed.
· Ensure a clean and organized work site.
· Secures and organizes tool trailer and materials at the end of the workday/work week.
· Schedules and completes warranty complaints and repairs on completed projects.
· Meets the long- and short-term goals established with the Project Manager and Executive Director.
· Organizes the warehouse as needed.
BASIC JOB QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
· Sufficient knowledge of residential, wood-frame construction.
· Outgoing nature, self-motivated, and driven by outcomes and relationships.
· Reliable and dependable with a strong work ethic.
· Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, including the ability and desire to work with and train a variety of people, personalities, ages, and backgrounds in the completion of daily tasks.
· Ability to exercise sensitivity and compassion in a range of situations.
· Ability to apply construction knowledge in Iowa Heartland Habitat’s unique mission work.
· Ability to lead, supervise and motivate individuals and teams of volunteers.
· Ability to read and interpret standard residential construction blueprints and specifications.
· Basic mathematical aptitude to calculate building measurements, quantities, etc.
· Understanding and support of the vision and mission of Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity.
· Flexibility regarding work assignments and work hours, and ability to work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.
· Must be willing to understand the big picture of the Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity ministry and know that construction is only a part of the larger goal.
· Valid driver’s license.
