Job description

Ardmore Roderick is seeking a full-time experienced Construction Cost Estimator with project control capabilities for our Rail and Transit (Infrastructure) group in Chicago, IL.
The estimator will supply technical knowledge and utilize historical production and cost data to perform the following essential job functions and responsibilities:

  • Calculates takeoffs from plans to determine quantities for preparing the project cost estimate.
  • Prepares independent cost estimates for evaluating and awarding construction contracts, contract change modifications, and potential claim settlements.
  • Reviews and evaluates estimates prepared by consultants and contractors.
  • Prepares cost estimates for analyzing value engineering opportunities.
  • Assists in constructability reviews.
  • Supports negotiations and provides detailed recommendations for finalizing change modifications and claims.
  • The work includes all aspects of heavy civil construction, including structural, utilities, facilities, and systems. Basic estimating knowledge for transit systems (traction power, signals, and communication) work is preferred.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, training, and/or related experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience preparing Construction Cost estimates.
  • Experience in the generation of cost estimates incorporating both direct and indirect cost details for comparison with heavy/civil contractor or consultant documentation.
  • Ability to contact specialty subcontractors or consultants to assist with securing estimate pricing and details on systems work.
  • Working knowledge of widely accepted cost estimating methodologies required by owners, consultants and/or contractors.
  • Demonstrated ability to approach technical issues, identify alternative solutions and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing standard MS Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to manage the workload including setting priorities and meeting cost estimate due date.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and negotiate agreements with the Client's contractors and consultants.

Other beneficial skills
  • Experience in generating cost estimates with tools such as HCSS HeavyBid and Bluebeam software.
  • P6 or Microsoft Project experience with ability to determine project activities and durations using independent cost estimate details.
  • Ability to mentor team members
  • Experience with change order management
  • Experience with Construction Cost tracking
  • Relevant experience applicable to rail and transit projects is a benefit.
