Under the direction of the Conservation Supervisor, the Conservationist 1 performs the following duties:
  • Supervise, Train, and Evaluate Corpsmembers.
  • Teach, Direct, and Counsel Corpsmembers.
  • Care, Maintenance, and Security of State Equipment and Property.
  • Recordkeeping and Personnel Administration.

Working Conditions

This position reports to the CCC Camarillo Center located at 3200 Wright Road Camarillo, CA 93010. The Camarillo Center is located in beautiful Ventura County and is a ½ hour's drive from Los Angeles activities and sandy beaches. You will be part of a collegial work culture with a dedicated team of 30+ other CCC staff, 100+ young adults as well as our partner agency CAL FIRE. Daily active outdoor work, often in arduous conditions. High volume of emergency response calls resulting in long periods of time away from home, sometimes a few days running up to 21 days. Semi-frequent consecutive outdoor overnights.

Career Consultation

California Conservation Corps is excited to take part in the first agency-wide collaborative physical career center. The career center is located in the heart of Downtown Sacramento in the brand new CNRA headquarters building. Services provided include one-on-one career consultations, application/resume review, career guidance, mock interviews, and tips for applying.

Special Requirements

This position requires the successful completion of the CalFire Type 1 Fire training program.

Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements prior to being appointed:

  • Commercial Driver License – Provide evidence that a Commercial Class C license with a Passenger Transport Vehicle special endorsement, or equivalent, has been obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
  • Pre-employment Drug Test – Pass a urine drug test. In accordance with the Federal Highway Administration regulations (49 CFR, Part 382), persons hired to a class requiring a commercial driver's license must take and pass a pre-employment drug test. Please note: Per California Code of Regulations 213.5, applicants who fail the drug test pursuant to section 213.4 (h), will be disqualified from the examination in which they are competing and, except as provided by section 213.5 (e), shall not be eligible to take any State civil service examination for a class for which drug testing is required until one year has elapsed from the date the drug test specimen is given.
  • Background Investigation – Undergo fingerprinting and successfully pass a Criminal Offender Record Information check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) which may or may not also include a background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
  • Medical Exam – a medical clearance exam is required for this classification.

Desirable Qualifications

Must be able to complete CALFIRE basic fire training after hire. In partnership with a CALFIRE Captain B, this position must be able to supervise a Type 1 fire crew on emergency response incidents throughout the state. Exhibit strength in character; respect the chain of command; possess unquestionable ethics; perform physically demanding work; demand excellence from others; and lead by example.

We seek candidates passionate about mentoring, teaching, and environmental stewardship. Successful candidates will have an interest in supporting young adults through a rigorous wildland firefighting training program as well as a series of wellness programs through a partnership with UCLA
