Congress and Campaigns Editor
USA Today is seeking a seasoned editor to lead a team covering Congress and Campaigns in our Washington Bureau.
We are seeking someone with excellent storytelling and communications skills to play a pivotal role in shaping our coverage of the 2024 campaign while also steering our coverage of Capitol Hill.
You have a track record of working with reporters to deliver scoops and exclusives. You think big and can inspire others to do the same. You have a talent for helping to shape narrative stories.
You are skilled at elevating news copy and meticulous about editing for accuracy and fairness. You have razor-sharp news judgment and thrive in a collaborative environment.
We are seeking an editor with the versatility to handle big breaking news stories, quick-turn stories and in-depth enterprise.
You are passionate about accountability journalism, have an eye for people-focused politics stories and want to deliver compelling content for a broad audience, rather than Washington insiders and pundits.
You are innovative and eager to use metrics, SEO and experimentation to grow our audience.
Job Level: Sr. Manager, Content
Minimum salary: $105,000.00
Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team of reporters focused on delivering compelling stories, scoops and exclusives about the biggest stories on the 2024 election.
  • Collaborate across the USA Today Network, teaming up with editors, reporters and visual journalists to create multimedia content that will help us grow audience.
  • Work with reporters to package and optimize stories to help them reach the widest possible audience.
  • Promote personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
  • Provide great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
  • Uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity, ethics and credibility. Perform other duties as necessary.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience covering politics and elections at a major news organization.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience editing and leading newsroom teams.
  • Experience planning and guiding coverage around major breaking stories.
  • A flair for lively, conversational writing and engaging headlines and the ability to help reporters hone these skills.
  • A track record of leading teams that generate scoops and exclusives.
  • A mindset of curiosity, growth and change, and a willingness to try, be wrong, and learn from setbacks.
  • An interest in new ways of engaging audiences on social platforms and alternate story forms.
  • An interest in political coverage that is centered on voters, not on process and punditry.
  • Flexibility to work night and weekend shifts as needed.
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices a plus.
  • Understanding of – or eagerness to learn about - audience analytics and how they can help inform content decisions.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check.
Application Instructions:
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
1. Your resume – one to two pages.
2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
