Job description

Requisition Id 12712

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and conduct the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace.

The Nuclear Code Integration Group (NCI) within the Nuclear Modeling and Simulation Development and Deployment Section, Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division at ORNL is seeking candidates to apply for the Computational Nuclear Engineer role. This role is responsible for the analysis, development, and deployment of software libraries, user interfaces, and tools for modeling and simulation software. Computational Nuclear Engineers within the NCI group will work with group, section, and division members and external contributors to engineer solutions for developers, and users of nuclear energy modeling and simulation software.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engineering and maintaining nuclear energy modeling and simulation software, including user interfaces (text and graphical based) including workflow accelerators and data visualization and analysis.
  • Ability to design and implement optimized algorithms and data structures in advanced modeling and simulation software.
  • Ability to design and develop software user features, tests, verification, and validation using a Software Quality Assurance Plan (SQAP) for production-quality Nuclear Engineering software and its global distribution.
  • Ability to work effectively individually and within a team to engineer large multi-component scientific and data-intensive software to meet the requirements of projects within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Ability to communicate effectively the work performed through reports, code manuals, presentations, and publications.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a M.S. or PhD in Nuclear engineering, computer science, or a related field, and at least 36 months of cumulative work experience through co-ops, internships, or post-graduate work.
  • Demonstrated advanced programming experience including the use of Fortran (2003+), C/C++, Python, Git, CMake, Bash, and Windows Batch.
  • Demonstrated writing and communication skills and ability to publish.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements.  Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Windows, Apple, and Linux computing platforms and the software tools expected to be heavily used in this role, which include CMake, Bash, Perl, Valgrind, Qt, and Windows Batch and PowerShell.
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices, including continuous integration, requirements management, and object-oriented programming concepts and design patterns.
  • Experience developing collaborative software within a Computational Nuclear analysis code suite such as SCALE, VERA, or Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS).
  • Experience working within a rigorous quality assurance program.
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance.
