In 1979, the Rhode Island Blood Center was established by the hospitals in Rhode Island as a private, not for profit agency to collect, test, and distribute blood products. Today, the Rhode Blood Center is a division of New York Blood Center and is among the nation's premium providers of blood products and services and an integral part of the Rhode Island community's health care system. As of December 2018, the Rhode Island Blood Center employs approximately 320 full- and part-time employees. “Career in Blood”


This position is responsible for Component Quality Control testing in the laboratory. Responsibilities include Component Quality Control procedures and the execution of Component Quality Control testing that is of moderate complexity or not covered by CLIA regulations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

• Platelet product management
•Product counts on Hematology instrument
•Perform product qualification
•Bacterial contamination testing
•Pathogen Reduction
• Label blood products after lot release
• Perform Blood Product QC procedures
• Perform Equipment Maintenance procedures
• Receive and prepare samples for testing
• Assist in component preparation
• Preparation of Biohazard waste for disposal
• Reagent receipt and assist in inventory management

 

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

• Follow the policies of the Rhode Island Blood Center
• Maintain professional ethics concerning confidentiality of donor information
• Participating in continuing education and in-service training


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

 

•Bachelor of Science degree in an applicable field of scientific study with a minimum of classroom laboratory experience (e.g.Chemistry, Biology) or Currently enrolled in approved Clinical Laboratory Science training program, ASCP certification eligible 

•MT/CLS student applicants must be a student in good standing.

•Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds. Must also be able to stand for long periods and sit, stand, walk and lift alternately throughout the duration of the shift.

•Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and data entry skills required

 

 

SCHEDULE:

3:00pm to 11:30pm, Monday through Friday, every third weekend and rotating holiday.

 

 

The proposed hourly wage for the Component Quality Control Technician is $20.79/hour.

Offers made to an individual candidate will depend on a variety of factors, including experience, skills, and job-related education.
