With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.
This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, 220 Faison Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.
As the Administrative Coordinator I, working under minimal supervision of the Administrative Coordinator II Compliance Auditor, you will serve as the Compliance Coding Auditor for the DIS inpatient facilities. Maintains a schedule of auditing hardcopy and EHR medical records at the DIS facilities. Keeps abreast of changes in the Medicare/Medicaid's rules & regulations, AHIMA National Coding Guidelines and Evaluation & Management (E&M) Guides. Develops and maintains appropriate educational in-services and training for clinicians. Establishes and provides consultation to the Administrative Coordinator II Compliance Auditor of any non-compliance activities and identifies training needs for corrective actions. Provides reports and completes specialized assignments.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Monitors state and federal rules and regulations; alerts DIS Compliance Officer of changes in regulations.
  • Stays abreast of changes in the Medicaid and Medicare rules/regulations, America Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) National Coding Guidelines and the Evaluation and Management (E&M) Guidelines.
  • Trains the newly hired Licensed Prescribing Practitioners (LPP) during orientation on documentation, and the E&M assignments. Provides annual training to all clinicians who provide billable services.
  • Performs coding, privacy and compliance audits at all DIS sites; BPH, WSHPI, BPH Forensics, Morris Village, Patrick Harris and CM Tucker Nursing Care Center. Informs Compliance Officer of non-compliance and recommends corrective actions. Enters "no bills" into spreadsheet and creates a quarterly report for non-billable services.
  • Serves as back-up to the DIS Compliance Officer and Privacy Coordinator in matters of patients' complaints, investigations and mitigations.
  • Establishes and provides consultation of coding research to management, medical staff, nursing and other departments as requested.
  • Organizes new information and coordinates a monthly Coding Roundtable for all DIS Coders and HIS Directors. Provides training to ensure correct dissemination of information.
  • Collaborates with HIS Directors based on facility specific payment methodologies; maintains contact with HIS Directors regarding coding of principal diagnosis and sequencing of co-morbidities on medical records of discharged patients.
  • Serves as resource person for applicable rules, regulations and policies relative to coding; maintains coding certification requirements; attends training/educational workshops when requested.
  • Serves on the DIS Information Management (IM) Committee and the SCDMH Inpatient Compliance Committee.
  • Abides by AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding and adheres to official national coding guidelines; complies with all SCDMH and DIS policies and procedure.
  • Conducts all work activities in accordance with confidentiality and privacy rules set forth by HIPAA.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirement: A high school diploma and work experience that is directly related to the area of employment. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the related work experience.
Agency Minimum Requirement: A high school diploma and relevant experience in business management, public administration or administrative services or a bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.

Preferred Qualifications
A Coding Certification (CCS, CCS-P,CCA, CPC, CPC-H) from either AHIMA or AAPC.
Additional Comments
The selected candidate must have the physical ability to access patient care areas on all DIS campuses and work related locations. Ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, reach, pull, push, bend, stoop, and lift up to 25 pounds.
