Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance has an exciting opportunity for a Complex Claims Director who has a passion for providing top notch customer service and claims excellence. At Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance our claims professionals are an integral part of our business. Every claim is handled with the utmost skill by seasoned and dedicated claims professionals. We are seeking an experienced professional to join our growing team in the New York office. This position is a visible role, both internally and externally, that requires excellent interpersonal skills and the desire to be a part of a dynamic, highly collaborative team.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Responsible for managing and evaluating general liability claims impacting primary and excess policies.
• Independently evaluating information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
• Working with outside counsel to provide best in class claims servicing to ensure optimal claims outcomes.
• Attending mediations on behalf of the company.
• Duties may include but are not limited to proactively handling claims from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution, working with and advising internal partners on claims, working and liaising with outside stakeholders throughout the life of a claim, managing with and liaising with defense counsel in developing a plan of action for ultimate resolution, obtaining budgets and meeting with clients, counsel and brokers.
• Providing outstanding customer service and working well with the insured, broker and underwriters in the handling and adjudication of claims.
• Analyzing matters for coverage and drafting coverage letters as appropriate while simultaneously communicating coverage positions effectively.
• Drafting reports, setting reserves within authority, and making claim recommendations concerning reserve changes.
• Traveling to conferences, mediations, trials, and client meetings as necessary.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

• Casualty claims or insurance defense experience at a carrier or law firm.
• College degree required. JD preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal communications and negotiation skills.
• Ability to thrive in a team environment.
• Minimum 10 years of previous claims or defense firm experience and/or other equivalent.

The base salary range for this position is from $120K -135K along with annual bonus eligibility; a candidate’s salary is determined by their relevant skills and experience. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.
